Honest question because I don’t fully understand when I see the numbers: why are people more afraid of coronavirus than the “standard” flu?

Because I didn’t get my coronavirus shot but I did get my flu shot.

In risk perception, things are scarier if they’re involuntary, out of your control, exotic, catastrophic, etc. COVID-19 meets a lot of those factors. It’s new, spreading around the world, we don’t completely understand it scientifically or how many people will get sick/die, no vaccine, etc. On the flip side the flu has been around forever, everyone’s had the flu/or at least knows people that did. We generally have an expectation you’ll feel crummy for a few days but then get better. There’s a shot you can get which increases your control/lowers risk. So all those factors together make people more concerned with COVID-19 versus the flu which is much much more likely to impact them.

No vaccine, and no known cure for the coronavirus.

like

Individually: it’s got a higher mortality rate, and with no vaccine available, most of the alternatives for risk reduction are the “paranoid” ones

Collectively: with no vaccine or past exposure, these novel strains can spread more explosively

It's not completely unwarranted, it's just early speculation. The Spanish flu had a similar mortality rate and it killed 70 million people worldwide in the early 1900s. Way easier for a worldwide pandemic in the age of air travel.
Also the old media adage "if it bleeds, it leads" holds here. Scaring people is an easy ways to get eyeballs, and what is scarier than a disease that will kill us all?
That being said, familiarity with the flu means people severely underestimate the danger of the annual flu season.

like

People some times fear what they don’t know.

Technically it has a higher mortality rate. But you have a much higher chance of getting the flu, low mortality rate unless you are not in good overall health. It’s all media driven.

I believe it has a much higher death rate than the flu as well, but as a US citizen, I’m sure the flu is a much more logical fear at this point in time. If coronavirus really spreads here, then it’s a different story..

People need to be scared about something at all times

I am glad COVID is still going on so I don’t have to make up excuses for not seeing my family during the holidays. It’s so nice to be able to say that I can’t travel right now. I am looking forward to a nice, stress-free holiday with my husband, not having to deal with my crazy family.

Has anyone else had to deal with a pay raise push back due to covid? My partner and I were promoted in the sense of a title change in the fall, and given a partial raise mid-spring and told the rest will come when the agency is more settled... But in that time they've hired 15+ more creatives (mostly intermediate or senior). We've been hesitant to try move because we love our work and team, have a good work/life balance, and know we're secure here during covid.

I spoke with a very close and dear friend of mine who I have known since middle school, we are both in our mid 50s now. She has dedicated her entire life to the nursing profession - ER, ICU, all forms of critical care. Immediately after 9/11 she travelled to the site to perform forensic site analysis. She has worked with Doctors Without Borders in places like Haiti following earthquakes. She now works in a Covid ICU unit for a major hospital in the Boston area. She is currently on medical (cont)

Need in-law advice. We’ve been very careful with COVID. Our children are too young to be vaccinated. We are visiting parents-in-law (elderly, vaccinated) and sister-in-law (her and her husband vaccinated, two small kids aren’t but they arrived early and are past incubation period). This is an isolated lake house. Turns out this whole other family is staying in the house. We weren’t informed. They are not vaccinated yet all are eligible. One, a camp counselor, is now ill w/ fever, cough, etc.

My agency is making salary cut backs cause of covid-19. Whole agency at 80%. Because I'm on a junior salary in Manchester that means 80% is less than minimum wage. Do I have any rights?

Alright - workshopping this - let’s see what comes back : working for agency out of NYC, have shoot in LA, pretty important, really dependent on emotion from some “real people” with some product mixed in. ECD and I, naturally want to be there. Agency & holding company has a strong anti travel policy for Covid. Client less so - What’s the solve? Advice? Book through production house? Any other ideas? Trust in the almighty Zoom?
