Honest question, do school still teach excel or PowerPoint these days? I’ve recently interviewed and worked with few new hire analysts and a lot of them seems to be lacking the basic skills in excel or PowerPoint. So I’m wondering if it’s because school nowdays focus on different technology like R or Tableau instead of excel.

Excel yes. PowerPoint I feel like is just self-learning throughout your life. I’ve never heard anyone I know take a class solely on PowerPoint

I have heard of one such person. Then again; this says more about them than about PowerPoint.

Excel has very little use in any of the cool majors companies care about, there is always a more specialized tool. If we want STEM people in our ranks we have to put up with the fact that they won’t learn Excel in uni (and, for those consultancies that actually do hire from any major, Excel is useless in basically any field that isn’t strictly business). That being said, a good/determined candidate can invest 2 hours in a free Excel online course; it really isn’t *that* hard to learn. I don’t particularly care whether a fresh college grad can use ppt, they’ll learn quickly enough through pls fixes.

Lmao why would anyone waste their education on learning Excel?

Yeah I got you, I just think it should be on the firm — especially if it’s a bigger one — to make sure that happens. Either provide short training or make new hires complete one independently before start date

I’ve never had any specific products (PPT, excel, tableau, etc) taught in school. Haven’t heard of a university that does as part of any curricula. That being said, you kind of have to pick up similar products so you can turn in assignments. Most if it is just people figuring their own stuff out though.

God I’m old. I had no idea schools might teach these things. Of course, none were invented until I’d been working for a good while. Still, I just assumed these were things one learned on the job.

They still are, and should. No point wanting to hire smart people who CaN tHiNK OuTSidE oF ThE BoX if we then fixate on whether they have formally learned how to align boxes with a mouse.

I graduated from college in 2020 and it was mandatory in high school to take a class that taught PowerPoint/word/excel. I even learned ppt starting in 4th grade so it probably depends on the schools. My undergrad was business and they also make you learn excel

Never learned Excel really but made PowerPoints all the time since middle school for class presentations/group work. 2020 grad

Advise working with a coworker who doesn't "answer the question directly": I just joined a new company and I am starting to work with a coworker but I feel like he tends to deflect my questions all the time and he often gives a vague/BS answer. FOR EXAMPLE, I stepped in reviewing the list of deliverables needed for the project, I provided my input but instead of discussing the actual context, he would just gave me a bunch of historical background information. How do I "cut to the chase"?
