Honest question - Do you think Facebook will lose any of its appeal to applicants in light of the news that’s been coming out? Any chance they drop out of FAANG and some other company takes their place?

Facebook and Amazon are both much easier to get into now than when FAANG became a thing, and both have rough WLB on some teams (although you still get paid well). There are a lot of other good tech companies that have emerged over the past few years. Personally I am not interested in Facebook for that reason - would be more excited to to to Snowflake, Roblox, Databricks, Square, or other companies that are still a bit earlier stage. Am happy where I am right now though. 🙂

Yes, have heard good things about Snowflake, Databricks, and Roblox, and seeing people make their way to there.

As someone who works at facebook, it is interesting to observe the difference in perception externally vs. internally; especially in my team we work on the exact things people say we don't do enough, and I've never worked in a place where you can have such a tangibly positive impact on the world. I love it!

Trust me. Most of us are just here to get paid and don't care about the company values/ mission etc. It's not that deep.

like

It further reinforces my feelings in never considering any offers from certain companies. Even before this all came to light I didn't support the mission of FB, Google, or Amazon. There isn't a dollar figure you could put on a role at those companies that would make me consider a role there. The same can be said of a lot of consulting firms and other businesses. Luckily in my field there's no shortage of ethical options, I'm sure some aren't in the same boat and don't judge them for their choice.

Silicon Valley piling onto the Facebook bashing is sort of like pissing your own pants: feels nice and warm in the moment, but regret will soon set in as the cold wet regulation follows.

Speaking of being clueless, can someone give cliffnotes on whistleblower report?

The whistleblower shared nothing we didn’t already know before 🤷🏻‍♂️

like

Those of us with ethical concerns have already determined Facebook is toxic to our society and have had no desire to work there for years. Those who still didn’t care aren’t suddenly going to care after the whistleblower event

Those who didn’t care may actually be mildly annoyed on the effect of their stock.

I have a college friend who worked on the Messenger Kids app, and when I pressed the question for her thoughts on it, it was clear she either hadn’t considered the implications or didn’t care. I admittedly thought less of her afterwards. If she had made peace with it and justified the work, fine. But to be completely ignorant or blaise about it was disheartening.

If you’re referring to that terrible Atlantic article from 2020, then joke’s on you, I guess. It was intellectually lazy drivel that started with a premise and then force fitted history and causality to make a case before doing a random potshot at Pete Buttigieg. My specific work is on government procurement — saving tax money on critical federal programs and negotiating against prime contractors. Happy to talk about past work I’ve done or even the work we do broadly that I avoid. However, none of it — even the unethical work the blue team does — comes remotely close to “destroying the middle class.” If we’re going to do game time on Amazon… should we discuss the grueling conditions it subjects its warehouse/delivery workers to or the way it lobbies against legislation for preventing the sale of counterfeit goods? FWIW, I wouldn’t work for Amazon either.

I was actually interested in Facebook for a long time and was in an active recruiting queue. However I did stop the process partially because of my questions around the company perception and some of the negative press over the past few years. This news reinforces that.

like

I don’t think so, you might lose a few people here and there but there’s still more applicants than positions and they still compensate well and that’s primarily what people care about

like

Depends on if they start paying less…

Given some of the work some of us have done for our clients. This would be a less bad exit.

This isn’t a new phenomenon at Facebook at all… chances are people who have stayed or joined in last 5 years already decided the money is worth it over the ethics. There’s a reason they pay so much
