Honest question- In this time where women are striving for equality and men need to play a key role in making this happen, why do we have women only conferences? How does alienating men help? #GHC19😑

Because women face unique challenges and situations in the workplace and these conferences allow them a place to speak specifically about these issues, hear from others who have gone through similar experiences, and network with other women. There is a “Women in Consulting” bowl, and sometimes women post the same question in this bowl and the WIC bowl and get much more helpful, supportive, relevant responses in that bowl than in this one. Sometimes it helps to interact with and hear from people who can truly empathize, which is why these conferences are important. The better question is why men feel alienated by a conference for women. It’s not a male-bashing forum, it’s not impacting men’s careers in any way, and it truly does have a positive impact on women’s equality, so why should men be at all opposed to this?

I’ve been at women’s events with a mixed gender panel and it’s remarkable that the one man on a panel of 5 women manages to take more air time than the women combined. This is the type of unconscious behavior that can be detrimental. I’ve also seen instances where it’s been fantastic to hear from men on “women’s topics” so it depends. We need to be aware of the dynamic shift between women only, men only and mixed gender. It’s not PC to say but it’s fact. As a woman, I know I’m less likely to express and honest controversial opinion in front of senior men at my company than women. That’s just the way it is and that’s why these conferences are still necessary. I can’t wait for the day they’re not.

This question comes up every year around the time of our women’s conferences. 1. I echo the idea that women, being the minority in the usual setting, need a forum where they can discuss topics unique to them and get perspectives from other women. If you’re always 20% of the population, how likely is it to have your voice heard? Or to have policies created that are tailored to your needs? 2. In all of these conferences and women’s events we do in our local office, we always extend the invite to the men. But whenever it’s framed as a “women’s initiative” the male attendance is close to zero. Personally I do believe men should attend. Just the practical fact that men still run these organizations and to change anything in a meaningful way, we need men on board. I’ve just sadly seen a real shortage of men who are truly allies. Could women do more to be inviting and encouraging? Probably, and I’m open to ideas. At the same time, men need to grow up and stop being defensive. Sorrynotsorry your relative position of power is diminishing. Sorrynotsorry equality feels like oppression to you. Want to join a women’s conference? Make your case. That’s what we’ve had to do for centuries to join your world.

M1 is calling out people who feel aggrieved by the implications that gender equality has vis a vie their relative power. The people who feel aggrieved are the divisive ones, not M1.

Those conferences typically have firm leadership (largely male) present as well. The point is to address the unique challenges women face in the workplace, give them tools to succeed, give them exposure to leadership, and have leadership hear directly from them. How is that identity politics. Does helping an underrepresented group get in a better position to succeed feel like it’s taking something away from the majority?

Or the WNBA for that matter

Sigh...maybe ask a woman colleague whom you respect. Typically, women can also help women and this is one way to network. Same with any other professional minority group. Why does this make men feel alienated?

like

It’s not a rule! Men definitely do attend. I know because I’ve gone and seen plenty of men there, however it’s design for women in tech.

Same perspective. I despise Identity politics.

Real issues of equality do not equal “identity politics.” Whatever that term means.

It doesn’t... I’ve had more female leaders than male leaders in my time in corporate America. It seems as if the pendulum has swung the other way.

Am Accenture and I guess it depends where in the business you work. I recently left, but in my previous office, all the managers and leadership were male, except for the HR leader.

Just would like to make sure that everyone knows that men can attend this event. I know because I have seen plenty of men there. The goal is for women in tech to come together and help promote this field because so few women are in it. The last time I went I believe the statistic was less than 20% women! It’s a really cool event that doesn’t stop anyone from attending. Maybe next year you should try to go and see what it’s all about.
