Recruiters are paid on placing people; communicating with candidates they are not placing is a waste of time in their eyes.
Lol they prefer to string you along. What if the current preferred candidate says no, then they still have you on the hook for that.

If their top preference fails the background check or backs out, they want to have you as backup
^ This. I worked for a company, and the person the company hired didn't show up for his first day. When they called him, he said he had a change of heart. #2 turned them down by that point, so they hired the 3rd candidate.
