Hoping to hear from others that have overcome mental, emotional, and/or physical problems. I’ve noticed destructive habits that have consequences on my life and have always put off working on them because of my crazy work schedule. I’m realizing that life will never get easier and hoping to hear from people about how they were able to change this mindset even with a busy/hectic life.

It’s very important to set boundaries for yourself personally and professionally. Mentally I’ve had enormous improvement putting boundaries up at work at sticking to them. You’ll notice the people who are most “together” do this too. Hard to get over the initial “guilt” but mental health is way more important. This will also help you balance emotions as hopefully you will feel more in control of your world. Creating a routine can do wonders for physical and mental health even if it’s just going on a walk once per day. Take baby steps but I promise if you continue to work at it you will see improvements.

This is excellent advice. Public accounting can easily become a job, hobby, obsession, etc. it’s important to prioritize and still stay on top of things, but that doesn’t mean burning out or at the expense of your mental, physical or emotional well being.

The nature of having a job is that you will always have a to do list. Remember that “no” is also a complete response. It’s easy to keep saying yes to things because we think we should or are being asked, but you saying no is giving someone else on your team the opportunity to say yes.

If you have conditioned your team to expect an immediate response to an email, they will always expect it. Start to set little boundaries and you will be amazed at how much time you really do have. We all have to make choices with how we use our time and you are right, we will never find “more” time.

Also, all companies regardless of how wonderful of a work culture have to make money. A firm is never going to tell you “you put in a hard day’s work today. That’s enough”. More is more and you need to learn when you have given it your best.

If you are really struggling, I recommend looking into your firm’s counseling or therapy sessions. Get help. There are so many resources! And, as a recovering workaholic, I constantly struggle with this; however, I have learned to prioritize myself and my family.

Good luck!!! And start small! Little things every day that you do for you- and write them down so you can keep track of your progress

I have invested a lot of time in reading different self help books - even if it’s just for 20 minutes a day. Something I consistently do especially during this WFH environment is setting time aside, whether it’s 30-40 minutes, during the day for myself. Typically I’ll take a quick walk during “lunch” as I’d typically leave my desk to grab lunch anyway. I’ll typically throw on a podcast or random music to decompress from work. No one has given me a hard time about doing this.
