Ask for new ones and see if picking your own photographer is an option. They basically have a spec sheet, or at least my last two firms did, so everyone around the country has the same look with dozens of different photographers. Marketing is important. Image is important. I would not hesitate to get a new shot, even at my own expense, until I was happy with it. My most recent one took literally 100 attempts, I had two outfits, and we stopped every 10 photos or so to adjust (I have strong bone structure so minor changes make a big difference, and I'm not unattractive, but I'm not photogenic *at all*). I will be goddamned if there's going to be a url that's .com/myname and me not be happy with what it looks like.

A4, I used to work in retail and I thought binder clips were only for floor mannequins!! 😂 I did get a new blazer for the shoot, but I’m also in a slightly more rural market (we lost our only Banana Republic years ago), so my only fast and easy option was a ponte blazer from Old Navy. I think it may have been part of the problem - it didn’t lay as smooth as I had hoped.

I got new headshots after I didn’t like the first set. A number of my starting class did the same. I then reviewed the second set of digital proofs live with the photographer and was honest that I didn’t think any of them looked like me, and then he did test shots until he found an angle I liked, and then took a few more to get a good shot. So...I guess the advice is push back until you are happy (enough)?

That’s helpful - every “fun” photoshoot I’ve done, the photographer has showed me the photos from the camera as we’ve gone along, so that should have been a red flag. And I should have insisted.

No advice, just solidarity. My photographer wouldn’t let me smile because “litigators aren’t pushovers,” so I was grimacing in every single proof. I cringe every time I see that picture.

like

Haha mine is the opposite. The photographer kept telling me to smile bigger because our firm likes us to looks happy; instead I look slightly psychotic 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also solidarity. Couldn’t someone have warned me that I should put some more color on my face or I’d be white as a ghost?

likehelpful

Ha! I actually checked with a few friends whose headshots I admire and they said a) no SPF, because it reflects light back at the camera, and b) use way more color than you think you need. So my makeup was the only thing that wasn’t a total nightmare.

like

Solidarity because my firm is doing this right now too. I haven’t gotten my hair done in a year and I feel fat. It feels totally out of touch to expect this from people right now.

like

Solidarity. Mine is terrible. I’m anxiously awaiting the day we can get new ones.

This happened to me. My headshots were taken first against the wall in the lobby with no professional lighting. Then my opportunity came for a re-take and they incorrectly scheduled the photo shoot on the wrong day and the photographer showed up while I was in court and I had to run back in the rain to get the photo taken (I have wavy hair. It was Frizz City). My two cents: your image is your responsibility. The firm is looking to cut costs and they don’t care about you or how you look (They should, but they don’t). So, I got my own headshots done and sent to the firm to be used. Honestly, feeling good about your image is worth every penny.

I’ve been in the industry for about 20 years, hundreds of pitches, dozens of speaking events at big shows. I used to be a natural when presenting. Fluid, clever and insightful while keeping it friendly and conversational. Since covid and WFH my presentation focus is totally off. Low energy, nervous, dry mouth, reading off slides, hard to keep my mind in the bigger picture or focus on the story. Womp womp. Really getting me down and not sure how to get the magic back. Depressing.

What is it about law that glorifies morning people so much? I am NOT one and wfh has been so great for me in terms of being able to set my own schedule, but now that we’re starting to go back to the office I’ve noticed some pointed comments about people not being in by 8am. I bill as much (generally more) than other associates, so why does it matter if I start at 9 and work late?? I’m finding it hard to go back to the arbitrary-feeling 8am office start when I know I’m not going to be productive.

Just wondering if this local or a problem all litigators are facing. COVID impacted trial scheduling . Courts then set trials randomly. Meanwhile more complaints were filed and more trial dates were set. Now, my court is simply refusing to grant stips to continue trial and ex partes. Our trial calendar is apocalyptic at this point. I understand the courts are backlogged and need to keep cases moving. But, matters are being neglected and I feel like the court is setting us up for malpractice.
