You are assuming everyone who moves to LA doesn’t already own a car
What is a “hot take”? Is it just stupid takes?
Also, people in SF often need cars, and NYC makes up in cost for not having a car in housing cost alone.
It’s not even on the list. And Manhattan is a subset of NYC, which is way pricier.

Gas and insurance is 5 - 600 a month? Is that real?

You could also buy a used car?
People who love in Venice/ Santa Monica don’t usually have cars. If you start to move outward (cheaper housing) then you start to incur car costs.
Plus gas is like $20-$40/ months and insurance like $100 so....
People who live in Venice/Santa Monica definitely do have cars. $20-$40 a month is not enough for gas unless you have a Prius, and $100/month on insurance is definitely a great deal.

Maybe not in terms of money, but you save yourself some sanity for sure. LA traffic is some of the worst I have seen in this country, and I live in Northern Virginia (which is also ranked one of the worst places in the US for commute times). Definition of sprawl and poor urban planning. My friends who live in LA describe how it is very difficult to plan anything spontaneous because it takes everybody so long to drive to a place to meet up.

That's why you live in LA proper and not outside - takes about 30 minutes to get to any of the hot spots. People who live 1 hour out from downtown are not in LA
Not entirely true. The trick to LA is finding a partially gentrified area to live in. I've got a 2 bd 2 ba fixed-rent apartment and I pay $2900/mo. It's 10 min from the beach, 15 min from work. Gas is therefore not $600/mo lmao... You gotta pick where you live based on where your work is. Live North of your office as a rule of thumb if you plan on living far from your office. You'll be against flow of traffic and you're set. There's life hacks to LA, and most people that transplant here blind, or look from the outside in, just don't get them.
I hate a lot about LA - entertainment industry, car culture, lack of weathers, but there's a lot of authenticity in the city from the OG Hispanic, black, and other immigrant families that are now getting gentrified out. Despite LA "fakeness" I would say the city is way more homey and authentic than Manhattan (and Brooklyn now), and certainly more authentic than the Bay Area. Things are rapidly changing though, and I'm seeing it first hand where I live where family homes are getting torn down for luxury apartments.
I wasn't trying to be subtle about that or even complaining about gentrification. It was stated as a matter of fact.
Are you driving an S class? My gas and insurance combined is $125 a month. My maintenance is under $500 per year. What a stupid hot take
