It’s significantly more durable than a smart watch and lots of people don’t want their watch connected to everything else in the world to disconnect from technology

Not really, it just reads like you prefer smart watches.
Having a “real beater” like a Casio that doesn’t require software updates or will die in a few days IS an important practical component to a collection.
A true watch doesn’t die in a week
Not all of the smart watches (maybe none) can take a beating the like the G-Shocks can. It’s all my 15 yo son wears and it’s what I wear if we’re floating the river, tubing, mountain biking, etc. just personal preference but makes sense for us.
I have a Suunto that I use sometimes as well for hiking and biking since I can track my route with GPS, but it’s not my favorite.
Battery life is the number one answer for me. I use mine for everything outdoors. I usually let my phone die so a watch wouldn't stand a chance.
My gshock has gone through hell and back for the last 8 years. I love that thing
Can you recommend a smart watch which will just give notifications. I specifically don’t need the continuous heart rate monitor

Nah, I disagree. The entire point of a G-Shock is to worry about it every 2-3 years when it needs a new battery, or never if it’s tough solar.
You can go in vacation, to the middle of nowhere, not worry about charging, not worry about getting robbed for it, not worry about beating the hell out of it, etc.

A “well rounded” collection includes both a smart watch and a G-shock, both filling different needs.

The smart watch is unnecessary though. It has nothing. To do with watch collection, it’s just wearable tech
There are major differences in G-Shocks. You have the basic ones and then you have the high end Frogman and Rangeman. Some models of the frogman are extremely rare and hence considered collectables. So it really depends on which G-Shock you are referring to.
