How about a big 4 protest to demand more pay.

Everyone demands better pay, but it's not like the pay is shit. New staff are making $60K, putting them above the median family income for the country. We bitch that the hours suck, but any high paying job requires more than 40 hour weeks. Show me the person making $200K working 40 hours (doesn't exist). Also everyone severely discounts the intangible value of the experience gained. I recently moved out of public after 5 years and now make 6 figures. The value of having B4 on the resume and the skills learned within definitely make up for the slightly below market pay from years 3-5.

Why are so many people hung up on the fact that you have to work crazy hours to get ahead. That's not true if you know what you're doing. I'm a manager and have gotten there by doing excellent work during the time I'm working, but I rarely work more than 40 hours outside of busy season and very rarely work more than 55 for my 2.5 months of busy season. It's all in your efficiencies, how you play the game, how you communicate your work progress, and learning to say no in a way that doesn't sound bad.

If you could actually coordinate a walkout on February 1st, it could work.

like

You go protest and I'll stay in the office while a new graduate takes your desk in a day. 😂😂😂

like

Just accepted a job over $200k and was explicitly told I would be working 40/hr weeks

like

@Senior 1 - i work on a fortune 200 company for most of the year. One day, you start to realize it doesn't matter, none of it. And so you do as good a job as you can in the minimum hours you have to work. Im efficient and likable and manage my team well. But I also go home because life is just too short to be wasting at a client site

like

@Senior 1 - I make over 200 and I work 40 hours a week, sometimes less. Don't make blanket statements.

IT Advisory. Manager, so I have seniors do the heavy lifting. They work more than 40.

like

I'm overpaid TBH

like

Between today was my last day so I will only join in the protest out of love for you all.

like

^ i should say that as a senior I worked the hours above. As manager it's less

like

^what market and what type of accounts? Are you on any Large Accelerated Filers? I'll say that on a large Fortune 100 engagement, even with an extremely efficient team and great audit plan we still put in some 70-75 hour weeks. It's just a ton of work to get through in 45 days. I don't think that even with the best of planning you can get through such a large engagement in 55 hour weeks.

like

^thats the right attitude. I'm sure your team appreciates it. Management having the right attitude make the entire difference. Unfortunately my SM was a real bitch who was the type to always put the firm above all else, including her staff.

The experience is the biggest chips they fry to us all - these same folks in Charlotte since I am familiar with that area are already above100k mark and I am still twiddling in the 70-80 range hoping I can make manager next year... so that I can get close. Why put in all that hours so that I can catch up to them after 5 years?

like

Obviously the firm and enough professionals believe in the intangible value of the experience and brand on the resume that they willingly accept below market.

It's a decision that I hope will get me to financial freedom faster with less of the public accounting stress - we will see how that works out and if I get too bored, I can always come back. I did not "shit" where I eat lol. I hope to spend more time doing other things I enjoy as a side hussle.

Why does side hussle sound like porn?

PWC 2, what is your level and what position you are accepting ?

like

I think the point is that to get to those good paying positions you'll likely need to put in many years of > 40 hour weeks.

Now that I'm promoted and looking to leave, I find myself caring less and not being proactive to take ownership. Will PMs and above realise this even if they don't call it out? Does it reflect badly? So apparently EY believes that moving to unlimited PTO will provide a first mover/differentiator advantage amongst the big 4.. I’d advise Deloitte, PWC, and KPMG folks to let EY stand alone on this one! None of us asked for this and they are doing it primarily to reduce PTO accrual liability for layoffs/in states where employers are limited in taking away earned PTO

How should you respond to a LinkedIn recruiter when the time isn’t right but you don’t want to burn a bridge? We all know consulting/advisory jobs in big 4 and mbb are tough and high burn ones. Expectations of high stress and long working hours are there. Why would people still want to work and stay in those jobs and expecting the companies to bend with their low stress tolerance.
