How are are elected Republicans going to claim that they’re the working class party and then be anti-union and anti-raising the minimum wage among other things?

They will do what they always do, and it will continue to work: - tax cuts for the rich - “you’re not poor, you’re just just a temporarily embarrassed millionaire, so we need more tax cuts for billionaires” - “I’d rather pay more for inferior services than pay one red cent to benefit someone I don’t approve of” - trickle down economics - reducing taxes on the wealthy - decreasing the amount of money paid in taxes by those who have tons of money

Going back to my economics class it will help to draw hourly wages on the Y-axis and jobs on the X-axis. Draw a line called supply diagonally from the lower left corner to the upper right corner with a slight curve—that’s the labor supply. Now draw a line called demand from the upper left quadrant to the lower right quadrant called demand - what employers are willing to pay. Raise the minimum wage - there are fewer jobs. QEFD

SM clearly never advanced past Econ 101 or they'd know why this is an inaccurate conclusion

I’m a hard core leftist. Think Bernie Bro level. But I’m also from the Midwest and hang out with a lot of working class people some of whom went red in the 2016 election. What resonated with them from Trump and the Republicans is the narrative that they’re finally being seen and that things will stay local (including solutions). A lot of the country is not LA, NY, SF, etc. It’s much smaller towns spread out across the country. Some are so small that people know each other by name. Think of those small towns you run into driving across the country and think “who lives here, there’s just a gas station and that’s it.” For smaller towns, three things tend to be true: (i) they’re predominantly white so race and ethnicity issues aren’t big since not a lot of racial minorities live there to begin with, (ii) they like their small community feel, and (iii) a lot of their economy has been local (ie a car factory, an arms factory, etc. employing a significant amount of folks in the town). Over the last 50 or so years, factories have been picking up and moving to China and other countries where there’s cheaper labor. This devastated a lot of the small towns, leaving people barely surviving. So their primary issue is not race, gender, sexuality, and all the other stuff Democrats scream about non stop. It’s pure class. They don’t have jobs or access to a working economy any more. But when they turn to their politicians, Democrats seem to busy talking about race, gender, sexuality and all these things they aren’t dealing with and think are waste of time, are telling them they need to essentially join the national economy and throw away their small town community to get jobs today, or they have to believe in some future “green job” that’s supposed to have come 20 years ago but isn’t and sounds made up, or are calling them deplorables because they believe discussions on race, gender, and other issues need to be a bit quieter until we fix their economy. None of that is appealable. I wouldn’t like Democrats either if I lived in an average American town/city. On the other hand, Trump and Republicans went around and told them their community won’t change. Big national standards and ways of life won’t infiltrate their community they grew up in and love. And they’ll bring back the factory jobs that left. Even if not entirely true, this narrative is so much more appealable to smaller towns. And when factories don’t come back, Trump and Republicans say it’s the Democrats in bed with China to promote a globalist agenda that puts jobs in China. That’s why the China narrative is taking off, cause that’s where jobs are being sent. But Democrats seem too dumb to realize what’s going on and they keep pushing this upper east side NY narrative of gender and race and environment and other issues many folks in the US don’t see outside of big cities. Imagine you used to work for a car factory for 20 years and it up and left and there’s no other job for you in town and you’ve been struggling for 5 years to make it. And you turn on CNN and there are rich black celebrities complaining about how they didn’t get an Oscar and the world is so unfair cause they have multiple millions, mansions, and cars but not getting an Oscar is the end of the world we need to stop everything and talk about it on a national level lol. I cringe just thinking about it. A really good movie about this with Steve Carrel is Irresistible. It just came out I think. EDIT: As for unions and increasing min wage, it’s seen as bad in smaller towns because they really can’t handle it. The reason jobs went to China is because Chinese labor is cheaper. Now you want to make everyone even in smaller towns get $15/hr. There’s no way people are gonna open up businesses there. Even more jobs will be sucked out to go to bigger cities or be taken to other countries. Again, you can’t apply an upper east side NY mentality and experience to the majority of America. That’s not what the US is and a lot of the issues that seem good to address and are happening in big towns really aren’t as important as the economic issues as they apply to the majority of the country (which are smaller towns/cities).

All my comments have just been from my personal experience. So please don’t accept any of it as some generalization. But interestingly I’ve had the same issue as you have. I brought that up with Midwestern conservatives I know, that support for policies directly affecting people of color or immigrants or other groups doesn’t mean people don’t support policies helping working class people. And a lot of times they overlap. But all I got back was that there isn’t enough time or room to address every problem there is and we need to prioritize the issues. And when all you’ve seen is economic issues and they don’t deal with racism and other isms like we do in more populated areas, they just don’t have the same view of urgency for other issues. So when Democrats bring up other issues and want to push an agenda where economic issues generally are like 5% of the platform and talking points, I noticed there’s this feeling of economic issues being put on the back burner. No one is talking about jobs leaving towns. Some mention green jobs but that’s been the case for last 20 years. And everything else is helping undocumented immigrants come in and get set up, helping stop one off bad cops from being racist in some city, or protecting minorities they don’t even see in their town through anti-discrimination laws, etc. it starts to seem like they’re being left behind because their specific economic issue has been ignored for 30+ years.

they are the party of working class culture wars, not actual working class interests
