I would recommend getting ASAP and going to a small firm or any law firm job you can get. Doc review does not develop the skills firms are looking for. Fortunately, Deloitte will look great on your resume.

At least at my old firm in DC, doc review attys were looked at worse than paralegals basically. No job insurance. Could be cut at any time. Sorry I know that’s kindof a gloom and doom answer but I would say find a small or mid size firm and go in as an associate.

At the firms I worked at in NY, the evening janitors had stable employment and I knew their names. Doc review attorneys, not so much.

As a doc reviewer at the moment, I lucked into an excellent firm where we work closely on the case. That being said- absolutely still grunt work but it's a decent paycheck with PTO and flexible hours. Plus the lack of overarching responsibility is wonderful in this time of great anxiety and trying to start a family. Although I should mention, I also have an LLM and three years of practicing criminal law (as well as a short stint as a special prosecutor), so CV credits aren't what I'm looking for at the moment. Flexible and non-anxiety inducing work is.

I couldn’t wait to leave document review hell. Run far and fast, especially if you are a newer attorney.

like

I'm at a small firm. We just think of them as grunt workers who come in when the few associates are too busy to do the document review. We don't get to know them or spend time with them.

like

Doc review attorneys are lower than legal secretaries at my firm. The hourly pay is probably about the same. It's a dead end proposition.

like

Similarly, what do people think about e-discovery attorneys? I see them at big law firms but they usually seem to come from less prestigious schools or don’t have the honors that other practice group attorneys have. No judgement on the less prestigious schools, it’s obviously not an indicator of ability. Thinking of K&S and the like.

Career ediscovery can be fascinating an in-demand. If you find it interesting, go for it.

A few firms have permanent doc review attorneys at satellite locations. WilmerHale in Dayton, OH, comes to mind. That’s not a bad gig if you don’t mind reviewing docs for your career.

Just curious what’s a permanent doc review attorneys salary?

When do partners decide when an associate is good enough to make partner? I’m a senior and it is extremely clear to me when an associate has it or doesn’t, and moreover it doesn’t take eight years to figure it out; it takes just one or two matters for me to know if they’re adding value or are ultimately just a commodity. It’s hard for me to avoid the conclusion that associates are largely being strung along by partners who are going to can them at some point, long after that decision is made.

Hi All, I recently interviewed at Amazon and Google for software engineer and passed both interviews. I have an offer on the table from Amazon but with Google I am officially in team matching and my recruiter tells me that the queue is pretty backed up now and it can take a long time. My question is should I take the Amazon offer now or decline Amazon and hold out for Google? I have heard that Google has better wlb/benefits. But I'm scared to decline Amazon without a guaranteed job offer.

Any in-house attorneys ever consider going into (or back to) private practice at a firm? What are your pro/con arguments? What terms would you consider most important in your decision to go to a firm? For context - I'm 15 YOE and have worked in government, a very large firm, and most recently in-house. My firm experience wasn't good, but that firm is a machine and doesn't treat attorneys well. Appreciate all the great perspectives from this group.

Someone please tell me if I am crazy. I am at a family law firm with approximately 25 attorneys. I previously worked at small shops where I essentially handled everything myself with no support staff. Now at my current firm I have a paralegal who really only makes my job more difficult… am I crazy to say that I don’t need a paralegal as I am comfortable operating as a solo and pay me slightly. I’m already pretty much operating on my own anyway. Feel like it’s a win win.

So I want my mgrs to put it in writing and how exactly they plan to measure it (other than they will "hear" it from ppl).... Cuz internally I can't separate what I'm feeling from what I think they're saying
