How are other districts compensating you for working over your contracted time? I’m not taking just over. I’m taking about 13+ hour work days, every day.

A handful of us Teachers are CTE/ROP, we are at will and hourly employees. So we don’t get paid over the Holidays or pupil free days. We are only paid for instruction time. Anything over that we are paid at a lower rate and are only allowed to claim 50 hours a year for extra duty hours.

Our school is already back (& has been since September) traditionally on Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Fri, but has virtual Wednesdays so they can deep clean and sanitize during the week. On these days they allow us to leave at 2pm instead of 4pm that day. Or we are allowed to start later like 10 and work into the evening here. They said it was because they see the dedication and hard work we put in and they know most of us go home and do more work especially this year. So we are allowed to start late or go work from home in the afternoon on Wednesdays. It was much appreciated.

There are places they pay you for working over the 40 hour week?!?! Where is this fairy tale kingdom and how do I arrange a dragon or unicorn to take me there?

Set things up so you don't work that long. Don't correct every freaking paper. They don't read it anyway. Correct tests together as a class; have them grade each other's and have them seated in alpha order and pass them up in alpha order so entering grades is easy. Use ck12.com It puts grades straight into CMS like Google Classroom... And it's FREE!!! DON'T make your own worksheets. Steal them (oops, sorry, "borrow them") from the best on the web. Better yet, no worksheets... Too long to copy the darn things. Textbook only. There. Solved, from a 3rd decade teacher. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Peace. ☮️

I don’t work outside of contract hours generally speaking. I have intentionally set up my classroom that way. I have reframed my understanding of what education/teaching is and have reshaped my work habits to ensure that self care is a central part if my classroom practices.

likefunny

I would love to do so, but my special education paperwork would not get done.

like

I always joke I wonder what I would get paid if I worked hourly and I was allowed to be paid for all the hours I work. We would probably bankrupt the state!

like

On like a more serious note.... how tragic would the state of education be in our country if teachers only worked contract hours and only used school budgets for our classrooms. WOW it would be so much worse for kids.

Exactly... but remember to take care of yourself!

Not talking money. Comp time, extra prep period, shorter Inservice day,, rotating of administrator covering a class period. Just a district doing something to show they understand what the teachers are going through.

MHS1, that sounds very similar to my mother’s situation. I feel it is abhorrent you had to teach the day she died or even worry about work the days after.

My dad was an engineer with GM, he worked crazy hours & never got overtime, however his salary in 1983 is what I make now 37 years later.

I refuse to work outside of contract time. If I don’t get it done today, it will surely be waiting for me tomorrow!

We are salary so nothing extra, can’t even go out to grab lunch.

We are not allowed to leave campus or have anything delivered since COVID.

By giving us more work...

Nothing, it is expected. We are told that we are a salary worker and are expected to work until everything is done.

At least twice the number of hours daily, plus weekends, 3 times as much documentation (at least) plus homework assignments from admin., expected to shift directions on a moments notice to teach a lesson received 15 minutes before class, during a class; and cuts coming next year due to an expected financial shortfall. No compensation given, offered, mentioned. But in fairness, where would it come from?!

Similar idea: how many other professions that require 2 college degrees (Michigan requires it after 5 years of teaching) have a daily 25 minute lunch “hour”?

We r salaried! No extra pay. Welcome to Education! We work those extra hours b/c we want our kids to have the best education we can give them. So, we work countless hours over our contractual day. Do we like it? No. But we will continue to do it.

I do not work on weekends!!!

like

That’s expected in AZ and we have never gotten an extra dime. We are also at the bottom for teacher pay and a huge teacher shortage.

No compensation from my district in middle TN.

like

No extra pay. Work at least 2-3 evenings at home and one day of the weekend. Not enough time in the day to do lesson plans, create curriculum, write IEPS, contact parents, meet with students. My district is hybrid and I feel this is double the work. I have 5 preps and I also am the case manager for our full remote students with IEPs. Never enough time in the day.
