Math Educators

How are you doing distance learning with core math classes? We are not currently doing anything, but we are unsure of anything after 3 weeks. Also, what are you doing for students without internet?

Khan Academy plus MyOpenMath are two resources I already use in the classroom that are readily adaptable for online instruction. The lack of computers and internet for students has always been a problem for those of us trying to embrace technology. Unfortunately, nothing teachers can realistically do to get them technology. It's one of many societal problems being highlighted in the current mess.

And even if all students had access to technology and internet, then how can we really make sure that students are actually learning anything?! It’s so easy to just take a picture of a math problem in certain apps and out pops the solution. And some have so little self motivation that they won’t actually attempt to learn anything. The only way I actually know that some are learning is by watching them do the work right in front of me!

My school sends out a choice board with 4 activities for each core content area every 2 weeks. The students are to choose one activity from each content to complete and submit through Google classroom or by email. Any students who do not have internet access are given paper copies that they pick up at designated times throughout the week.

All students have laptops that are school issued. We are holding school online with a “bell schedule” so we don’t overlap each other. I teach Algebra2 Honors & Precalc. I am having live online meeting 3x a week, but recording lectures with guided notes for students to view before the class meetings. Still figuring out quizzing and testing in this environment:) any suggestions?

Yeah there’s no way to make testing secure. They will cheat. And we can’t count on parents to watch them. I’ve had a parent drop off work her 15 year old supposedly did but the handwriting is clearly his brother’s (who I taught last year). As long as they pass, a lot of parents don’t seem to care how.

I make video lessons that I record using PowerPoint. The kids watch and we meet on Skype a few times a week to answer questions and clear up concepts. It’s working well.

We just finished two weeks of distance learning. I teach 6th grade math. I'm using Khan Academy (Khan is a great program and especially now a lifesaver) and weekly homework that the students were already familiar with. I'm also using Math Antics videos and worksheets. I supplement with other videos that are appropriate for the topic that are online. I have students use Kami to write on pdfs. Google Classroom is great and students are used to using it. The stream also allows teachers to communicate with our students. Students also use it and hangouts to "talk" to each other. Our district loaned the classroom chromebooks to our students. Two internet providers are offering two months of free internet to households with schoolage children as well as college students that didn't have access. The first week was really tough as students and parents got used to the new way of learning. I had to get used to doing everything online and typing really clear, specific directions. I was answering emails and reaching out to students that hadn't checked in until the late evening. This past week was much easier. Everyone is adjusting. My concern is keeping students motivated as the weeks turn into a month.

We have been using Google classroom to organize notes, and assignments. Students are either taking pictures if their work or scanning them in and then submitting via google classroom. In addition to paper notes, students have access to online textbooks, and I've been uploading Khan Academy style videos made with the app Show Me on my iPad. Students where also allowed to come pick up their school chromebooks too. Students with no internet are being given paper copies of everything.

I hate to say this, my school district started a curriculum that delves into LGBTQ lifestyles. I just wonder if we should just focus on teaching academics and stay out of the lifestyle differences.

Least value-adding thing you've seen anyone do, especially with regards to ways of working. E.g. folks regularly spending time classifying documents that should honestly have been thrown out long ago
