15+ years experience in Forensic Accounting. What would be considered fair pay in the NYC area? Average yearly Billings was 2,500, however recently took over the building out of systems, training younger staff, more marketing in a set region; basically more non billable work.

I have a recruiter showing me a general overview of FTI Consulting saying that compensation would consist of base salary + monthly qualified billables + 10% to 20% annual bonus. Is this similar to A&M (% of billable hours)? I'm currently in TS but am looking for a boost in compensation, more than a public accounting firm can offer. What kind of $ are FTI seniors making in this market?

What matters more: meeting/exceeding billable requirements or doing high quality work well above your class year?

New Orleans attorneys: my firm is trying to gather data on billable requirements, rates, and salaries because it’s been experiencing crazy turnover lately. If you’re comfortable, it would be helpful if those in New Orleans or similar markets can share this information. I’ll go first: 1. Firm’s primary practice: insurance defense; 2. Firm size: 25-50 attorneys; 3. Billable requirement: 1950 annual; 4. Salary range for 1-5 year associates: 70k-100k; 5. Salary for 5-8 year associates: 100k-125k.

First Post: Flexibility as an Attorney

Am I expected to be in front of my laptop during business hours every single day or can I make an appointment or head to the gym at certain times?

For background, I’m a newly minted attorney at a small to mid-size firm with reasonable billable hours (under 2000 annually). I also get to work from home multiple days a week. There has been no mention of expectations and the turnover rate is so high, I don’t know who to ask.

I have practiced law for several years and still struggle with the feast-or-famine nature of my practice. (Sudden rush of client outreach, many emergencies, then … nothing). A famine week might be 3-4 billable hours/day. My practice area does not have a predictable annual cycle, like “year end” or “tax day.” Any tips from other attorneys for how to recognize, predict, and/or even out these periods?

Has anyone made a move from a boutique firm to Big Law, regretted it, stuck it out, and found success? I am in the ‘regretted it’ phase, but it may be culture shock. I started as a legal assistant for a solo practitioner 11 years ago and am now an IP Paralegal. I’ve never had keep track of billable time, and I think that’s one of the biggest adjustments.

What are firm’s known billable requirements? Is there a ramp up period?

Is it wrong to have a preference of dating someone at your level career-wise? Or is that too superficial? I have tried to be open-minded by dating guys who didn’t have an actual career path* and it never works. 😩 I want someone who I can build with long term who continues to progress into their career.
