Just turned 40 with 15 years of relevant industry experience, and my Big 4 employer brought me in at a level designed for 25 year-olds. Career progression is apparently based on time in role rather than performance, so I’ll have to spend 8 years climbing back to the level I was at pre-recession. Looking to transition from an electrical engineer (wide range of experience in low and medium voltage systems) to FPGA or embedded system engineer. While I really do enjoy the design aspect of power systems, I've always leaned more towards the software side of EE and I like working closely with hardware. I am interviewing at Adobe for a HR Generalist Contract position and when they asked me what my pay expectations are, I asked them what their pay range and expectations were for this role. They let me know they were unable to tell me, yet still wanted me to give an answer. Do you believe that’s fair? How should I bring up pay expectations in my next round of interviews to ensure I am aware of what this position is offering so I don’t lowball or overshoot myself?

So I work for a division called “In house services” where I am essentially an extension to my clients HR. My client recent had me source for a Program Coordinator in Talent Acquisition. They just offered her 7k more than what I make. She acts as a support to TA while I do full cycle direct hire & manage a 50+ contractor workforce managing about 30 open reqs at one time. To my employees, I am their HR and Payroll. I know the client TA people make even more. Is it worth bringing up to my boss?
