Generally very bad. However, I will say that it's gotten more commonplace as they've overhired and had less attrition in recent years and need to get people out the door to keep the churn and burn going
Literally hot garbage. Like "this career is not for you" levels of bad. Only people I know of who got PIP'd who were technically sound had serious motivation issues.
Serious motivational issues will do it. 👋
You might as well find a new job
Used to be that poor performance on client work could land you on a PIP. Now you can get on a PIP for not meeting sales goals. I've seen great performers terminated for the sole reason thar they didn't sell enough. One case is ironic bc now a bunch of work was won (from the work of the fired MD) and it's a scramble to get a delivery MD/partner.
It can be the team environment as well. I’m on one now and was well regarded before and since that team.
There are two purposes of the PIP.
One is to provide documentation and some time period to create a solid case for termination and limit wrongful termination claim.
Second, for people who don’t seem to “get” the coaching and the need to improve.
If you read the PIP and you can’t see yourself being able to perform, time to seek other employment.
Otherwise, execute the pip and move on
