How bad is fox rental car? They are about a third of the price of Hertz/avis/budget for a week long suv rental. Reviews are bad, but there is a selection bias with Yelp and Google.

I’ve rented from them before. Typically the issue with these cheaper options are 1) they are further from the airport 2) they don’t have as many shuttles picking up and dropping off and might close earlier and open later than others 3) general customer service and hidden fees. Depending on the airport it might not be too bad and you may not even notice a difference.

Pre covid: no issues. In the last 6 months I can't say I recommend:

First time they didn't have a car for us. Said to prepay so you could have a car.
Second time we prepaid and they didn't have the type of car we reserved, which was a 4x4 needed to access locations otherwise inaccessible.

Done with fox. Maybe one strategy is to reserve but not prepay and then have a backup car place you can check if it doesn't work out so you don't get stuck. They rope in with prices but do not deliver what is promised.

I got it at LAX once. It was not too bad. The car that I booked was not available when I showed up, so they gave me free upgrade. Friendly staffs. Can't say for all of them though, but my personal experience is pretty good.

I used them in Austin. They were honestly fine . The car wasn’t as nice as other agencies but still ok

Used them in Phoenix. Two hour wait for a car. They closed the office before I got to the front of the line and I was told to return the next day. When I returned there was a two hour wait again but I got a car this time. Car was fine. Price was worth the effort.

Concerned about Johnson’s strength in consulting placement even for T2; seems to have mixed reviews. Could also reapply this fall and add Tuck and Kellogg to the mix but unsure if it’s worth the risk as this fall may be very competitive.

I heard someone make a bold statement that contributing to a traditional 401k versus a Roth 401k were the exact same assuming the same tax rate. I ran the numbers and to my surprise they were not wrong (even considering the earnings). Can anyone explain why a Roth would ever make sense given that income will likely be lower and therefore lower tax rate in retirement?

Hi tax 🐠,

I have a question for those who prep individual tax returns. My parents claim my grandfather as a dependent on their tax return and due to their low income, receive PTC for the premiums they pay on his insurance (not eligible for medicare). However, would it be advantageous to have him file for his own tax return (he stays with my parents and doesn't have his own proof of residency via bills). If so, can he get PTC if his income is 0?

Curious about thoughts on on discount points (I think I’ve already read every article on Google). I am refinancing my personal residence (future rental) as well as a rental property. The mortgage brokers discourage me from spending a ton on points (rolled in, not up front). In some cases, it’s a 16 year break even. I get that’s a very long time to break even, but I have no intention of getting rid of the properties and doubt rates will drop much below current. Max breakeven point for you?
