Don’t quit! I am in the same boat - have been really really wanting to leave and just started actively looking in earnest about a month and a half ago. I’ve been begging for someone (friends, family) to agree that its ok to quit without another job lined up and I can’t get anyone to back me up 😂. I took some of my PTO, thinking about sabbatical... but you don’t want to lose your heathcare and other benefits while you are looking for a new job. I’ve been starting to communicate to my PML stricter boundaries regards to hours, etc. because I know I’m not staying there’s not as much anxiety/i don’t care that person xy and z is annoyed that i won’t sign on Saturday and Sunday or work 14 hours a day.

Quitting with nothing lined up isn’t ideal, but I know more than just a few people who have done this and they have landed on their feet. In addition, I’ve noticed that those people tend to have a higher risk appetite and have ended up happier and making more money than their fearful peers (like me) who cautiously over think every career move. My take away has been to work on this (for myself). I stayed in my last role for a busy season longer than I should have, and it had a huge impact on my quality of life. I don’t recommend doing that. We are brainwashed in this industry to stay miserable and underpaid for as long as possible for some great opportunity in the future, however, this industry offers many great opportunities with many paths to get there.

Do what you need to for yourself. The B4 don’t really care about us. You have to put yourself first at the end of the day.
I reached my tipping point a few weeks ago and will be finding a new job after the compliance season is done. There still are places hiring right now.
Could you potentially take a leave of absence?

My friend was S3 when she quit after busy season without anything lined up. She landed a job 3 months later and she’s been happy. I’ll also be leaving as a M1 before busy season to go to back to school to pursue healthcare.

Been thinking about going into nursing for a couple years now but was afraid of starting over in a new career when I’ve already invested 5 years in public accounting. Working from home during Covid gave me the push to enroll in a couple of prereq classes this Fall as they’re all online while still working in PA. I plan to leave PA altogether to become a full time student starting the Spring 2021 semester to be able to get into an accelerated nursing program.

There’s still 4 months till busy season - update your resume and start searching immediately to get out. I don’t think quitting without another job lined up is ever a good option, especially right now. 4 month is plenty of time to find another job. So either suck it up another year or start interviewing.

Start studying now. Let your teams know that passing your CPA exams is one of your priorities so you need to carve out some time in the day to focus on that. They should support you. Pass some exams so that when you start interviewing, you can say “I’m currently pursuing my CPA license. I’ve passed these exams, have scheduled to take these exams on these months, and have the experienced hours qualification.”

What do you mean by rising senior ? Don’t be so full of yourself. You can’t handle pressure for 2 years and you think you are doing killer job that you are up and coming star ?

funny

I had a take a LOA during my one of my years for my mental health. I was the only staff and the next level up was a senior 3. I kept wanting to work as hard as him and know as much as him, My psychiatrist taught me that each person has a different capacity for each aspect of life. You’ll ruin yourself trying to match someone else’s capacity.

Don’t quit.

My gf quit bc she couldnt handle the stress. It’s been 3 months and it’s been rlly tough to get a job when you are not employed.

Instead take a leave of absence

I understand that feeling. Do you think you can hold out until you get promoted to senior? Would that Deloitte promotion happen this year or next?

So true. I didn't think working from home would really have this impact for me but it did mess with my work life boundaries.

Also have been considering this! It’s helped me to at least apply to jobs, and I’m honestly thinking of just making a lateral jump because I want out so bad. Seems like there’s still companies with positions open, can try to do the bare minimum and apply for jobs.

I would go for another operational company where there is consistent steady pace work and focus on my cpa. If you would like to pursue your career in accounting/finance

I quit without a job offer (senior 2) and it’s the best thing I’ve done! It’s not worth staying if you know you don’t see yourself there long term. If you have enough savings, do it and study for the CPA!

What did you do about medical?

Also want to add that the job market is hot! There are jobs out there but also important to use your network.

Some info:
- Both roles are for boutique digital consulting firms in Chicago
- Consultant 1 positions requiring 3-5 years experience
- My range: $100k-$120k base
- I have 4 yrs experience, 2 of which in a BA/Product owner role (non b4 accounting firm)
