Been a little over six months since I have traveled. About to be working in San Diego for my next project. In short is Starwood still the better option or Marriott or does it even matter now?

We just got a new AD on the team. We’ve worked together on a few projects but she hasn’t been able to hit deadlines. I’m still barely 6 months in myself but she’s a Senior AD so I’m a little confused. My work is always good to go but we’ve been having to push things back bc her side of things aren’t done. If I could be both a CW and an AD… I would tbh. How should I go about this? I also have 1:1’s every week with my manager so considering bringing that up to her as well. Thanks ~

Why hasn’t biglaw made the transition to state of the art technology yet? Like MacBooks, simultaneous document collaboration technology, mobile friendly document editing software, and just generally, new, fast software that works and doesn’t crash. Why are biglaw firms stuck on these ancient tech stacks that cost them millions to maintain and are so detrimental to associate efficiency?

Am starting at my first job with a billable target soon. How does the target work when you join partway through the year?

I just had an interview with 5 different attorneys (4 partners, 1 associate). Should I send a thank you email to all of them (separate emails of course)? Or is that not really appropriate? If I should one, should it be today or wait until tomorrow? Not sure what the proper etiquette is.

Just lateraled and looks like I’ll be taking on a sizeable privacy practice from an associate who left recently. Any benefit to CIPP and CIPM training/certification as a lawyer? In DC if that matters.

I work for a non profit litigation group and handle federal litigation and administrative hearings as necessary. It’s salary with no billables. There’s some job insecurity and I’m thinking about jumping to a firm and would be “part-time” until and unless the group decides to replace me. I’m just trying to figure out how the billing would work. I’m salaried currently and don’t know how to structure it at a new firm so I am still getting paid for the project. Any thoughts?

Ethics question: can I advertise/target clients in areas I DON’T practice in? I’ve gotten a few referral fees from firms in different areas (primarily PI), and I’d like to attract more!

I want to hear from people that have been in this profession for over a decade and are happy. Did you stay because you enjoy the job or for the money or prestige? Or because you couldn't find a way out?

I’m about to lateral into a BigLaw law firm in New York from another comparable firm from London (yep, international background). The offer has been made but I’d like to meet with associates before signing and the firm has agreed. I’m keen to know what the work culture is like, how work is allocated and mentoring enabled. What kind of associates should I ask to speak with and what questions should I ask?

A partner keeps asking me specifically why a document is drafted a certain way or things like “did we really not include X?” I didn’t draft the document, a senior on the team did who is apparently fine with leaving me out to dry. What’s the best way to handle this? Is there a way to ask the senior to address the questions without sounding too passive aggressive? Or do I just let the partner know that I don’t have insight into why since I didn’t draft it?

Student Loan ReFi: with the fed signaling yesterday they may raise interest rates earlier than expected, is anyone still waiting to refi until we get closer to end of forbearance on May 1, rather than locking in a lower interest rate now? I understand the loan forgiveness angle, but I’m a high earner with high loan balance and doubt I’d qualify for any forgiveness so locking in a lower interest rate is becoming more appealing to me.

What does being terminated as an associate look like during WFH? Our office is having a serious drop in billable hours. If one of us was terminated, how awkward is it to get things from the office?

Any other first year associates constantly feel like they don’t know what they’re doing?
