Recruiter here - this is where to use your elevator speech. create a 2-3 minute monologue capturing your career highlights and what brought you to the interview.

likehelpful

I think you’re supposed to answer about how you fit the position. Study the job description.

There is something called the STAR method try to incorporate that as well. I hope this helps.

likehelpful

I’ve got a well rehearsed pitch style speech about myself. Takes about 45 seconds to get though and hits all the highlights: History, certifications, extra curriculars, awards. Worked on it in the car a few years ago. It works great because it’s crafted to pack all the things I want to get in right st the beginning.

like

I am just looking for a well prepared elevator speech.

This is a blank canvas, it’s an opportunity for you to drive the interview/conversation. It’s an opportunity to make sure you get in any stories or points in on your terms, and it’s an opportunity to show your personality.

This is the easiest question asked in an interview, if you are prepared. I want to see that preparation.

likesmarthelpful

Unfortunately, you didn’t answer the question.

likefunny

When in an interview I got asked about myself I use to speak about non strictly working related things (mostly interests and activities) so they can understand who I am and how what I do outside of my job can influence my working abilities (eg sports, curiosities, etc)

likehelpful

I start by highlighting my skills and how they’re mapped to the role. How long I’ve applied those skills across various roles and organisations.

I then go to talk about relevant education and certifications before highlighting achievements.

Then close by talking about how I spend my time when not working (mostly personal and professional development not anime or video games).

Simple stuff really. Don’t spend more than 1.45 minutes doing this.

There is only one question interviewers are really asking - what will you do for me if I hire you? Every answer you give for any question has to be formed by this question.

Tell me about yourself should be a synopsis of what you have done that answers what they are asking for on the job posting. Make it an engaging story. Why are you in uniquely qualified for this position? Turn that into a statement that answers the question - Tell me about yourself. If you have done your due diligence, you will know about the company and its to work in the world, you will know about its mission and its social impact programs. Find a way to include truthfully how are you aligned what's the company.

Tell me about yourself really is not about you, it is about them. If you want the job and are excited about working for the company this should not be hard to do

Good Luck!

likehelpful

You can talk about what makes you you, what your values are etc. Worked well for me

likehelpful

Echo all the above. I usually tie my resume items and my childhood together with a few themes - what’s my personality, what I enjoy, what I want to become based off of these experiences.

likehelpful

Have an interview Monday - all these answers have helped. Thanks everyone!

like

Answer this uniquely to the job you are applying for. Tell them how your experience and career focus fits what they want without directly saying so. Use words from the job posting,ie) passionate, client-focussed, organized....

like

Have a 1-2 minute statement written out that you can recite like it is not being read or memorized. Quick synopsis of how you got to where you currently are. Some of your experience that is pertinent. Then “people describe me as being …..” and maybe “What makes me great for this job is …. “

likehelpful

To add a different perspective, tell us about yourself is an opportunity to be creative.

Blah blah about the damn elevator pitch. I WANT TO KNOW who you are as a person. Idgaf about “my name is x and I’ve always wanted to work in x” because you’re going to tell me that later or when you first join the interview.

This is a valuable time to think outside of the box. “Well, I’m a music enthusiast who enjoys going to concerts and I play the guitar on the side. I get my educational news from TikTok, and I spend lots of time with my partner and our dog. I’m family oriented and love having a social life, and I know at this company one of the values is building relationships and thinking creatively, so i can see myself and my passions blending well together.”

Something on those lines. CONNECT with me. Show me you’re fkn human, NOT a gd robot who memorized a 10sec speech.

You’re at kpmg anyways, so it’s not like they care lol. But my corporation? They care.

Your post is a huge red flag 🚩 to me. You’re the definition of a red flag because if your one minded thinking.

The game is on the next level and we just left you.

I’ve found it’s best to lead with basic background info about your yourself (ie where you were born and raised/ personality type), then talk about how those things tie in with your career goals/ passions and any hobbies or non-work activities that relate to the job you’re interviewing for. Usually when I do that I get a pretty good response from hiring managers and interviewers- but definitely include things that would be relevant to the prospective role or company

I always start with an introduction to who I am, what my role is, where I went to school. Then I pitch myself off what interested me from a young age with examples that has made me the person I am today and make sure it ties into the job description

I always appreciate when you tell me a little about yourself personally too! (It helps tell me who you are as a person and how you’d fit in the company/team.) When I interview I try to do this order: Background, Education, Experience/professional work.

Example:
Background- I grew up here, enjoy doing this, which led me to a passion for this.
Education: I took that passion and focused on it in college, then had these internships
Professional: those internships led me to xyz jobs…

helpful

I watched a wonderful video from Jodi Glickman that directed to lead with your intentions and goals as they are relevant to the role and your experience - lead with your intended “destination”
Not where you have been- but where you are determined to go in the role. Look her up- might help.

I find it's always best when people are out there, don't just give the basic answer that everyone gives, that's just playing it safe, most places want an answer that defines you different from everyone else

Has anyone had issues with hiring department? I applied to a IT position, passed the interview and they gave me a start date and salary. I was very happy and can’t wait to start but then… my recruiter told me that we have to delay the start date because my badge has not been created yet. Then it has been 4 weeks later and they say they are very sorry for the wait and they increased my pay up significantly to help compensate for the lost days. But idk what to do.. should I stay or look elsewhere

I have 5 YOE in Analytics... always thought I wanted to be a DS, but every job (even the junior ones) required experience in ML development. Though I am part of the ML project, I'm not the person develop the model. And I have a hard time when the interviewer ask about how I develop the model and what hyperparameters I tuned. I know the thought process and stuff but 'I' wasn't the one who did that part in the project. How to convince them that I could do the job without taking credit of others.

Let me ask this... Many interviewers asks you to write a code which is a tricky one or difficult that while working we usually google it.
They reject us if we fail to write a code with the desired output. It demotivates and you lose your confidence as a developer.
I have a good knowledge and experience of my skill set, and I am delivering good work on time, but such incidents make me to doubt myself .
How do you face such situations? Is it normal for developers?

Do you ever just have a moment and wonder how some people make it through the day? We had an interview scheduled today for an executive assistant role. Not an internship… This young lady, probably in her mid to late ’20s showed up with her mother and at first, I thought it weird but maybe she is her ride. No, the mother comes into the interview sits down, and answers most of the questions. I didn’t know how to cut the process off, so I told them we would be in touch and the mother didn’t seem to like that answer and left in a huff!! Like I am sorry for wasting your time lady.
