Billable would decrease by 150. Not leaving big law but moving down the 100 list. Done a ton of research and it seems like the work life balance would be significantly better/better culture. Partner seems more attainable, numbers there are like 3:1.

That sounds like a good move to me. Especially if the people are nicer.

My firm allows you to reduce your billable target for a corresponding reduction in pay. That's eventually going to be worth it to me. For now, I'll keep hitting that 1900.

Depends- what is the bonus structure like? Billable hour requirements can sometimes be deceiving... also I wouldn’t take a pay cut unless you’re leaving biglaw or going in-house/gov

If you’re going to mid-sized or small with a better partnership opportunity, I’d say take it as long as your billable go down at least 100. If your billing 2000-2100 now and billable are 1850-1900, that’s a good improvement in work-life condition.

I’d be going from 1950 to 1800.

I’m pretty sure colleagues at my firm are inflating their billable hours. Is this the norm? I suspect many of you will think this is obvious and/or that I’m naive but wtf? I find hitting 2200 is tough even with a good sized work load. Am I just expected to play the game? I don’t want to sound self-righteous but if most are lying just to make the requirement, then maybe the requirement should be lower.

When we’re all comparing/complaining about hours at the end of the year are we including pro bono hours in that total? I’m nearing 2050 billables for the year but I have another 500 pro bono hours that should be added on. At the same time, I keep hearing about all these people straight billing 2,400+. Trying to determine if I should’ve tried to pick up more billable work to stay in the middle of the pack (i.e. not interested in partnership, just trying not to get canned).

I’ve read on here that sometimes they will let you go day of and pay you out for two weeks but I don’t see why any firm would do that for somebody not currently performing billable work...
