How can I apply what I’m learning? Ex: I’m doing a course on learning Python. My current job doesn’t use it at all and if I interview for a job that requires it they’ll say I’m not experienced.

Do you build reports/do analysis in excel? Do it in python as practice and look for new things to try, like visualizations. You can often find opportunities to at least practice using real work, I’ve had that turn into actually using python on projects and gaining valuable experience

like

Build some stuff to automate things in your personal life

Do you have a technical background ? If not then you’ll need to go through one of those data science boot camps, they can help you pivot

Additionally do a lot of projects

get into machine learning. python is pretty good with it. also buy a RaspberryaPi. a lot of cool projects you can do on that

Find an open source project and contribute to it.

You may need to make sure what you do is not breaking external employment or independence rules, but if you’re not getting paid it should be fine in many cases.

Bring samples of some projects you’ve worked on. I tried to switch to an industry job that dabbled in programming along with compliance. I was totally unprepared for the advance questions from the developers though. Got roasted but it was a good experience and I know what level of skill I need to bring to the table. Get ready for 5-8 hours of back to back interviews.

Hello. I’m looking to pivot into the Data Analyst career path. My background is IT support. I’m currently taking the Google Data Analytics course. I’ve read it’s not necessary to take the course, however, since starting the course I’ve found it to be helpful.

My question is this. I don’t have any experience in this field. I’d love to volunteer, but again no experience. For someone wanting to land an interview and potentially get hired, how should one go about getting the skills?

Anyone have bad experiences with in-house recruiters willing to share? I've been interviewing for an in-house gig, and the company's recruiter has been leading me on and blowing their own deadlines. "We'll have a decision by Tuesday!" No update, then I'll follow up, then I'll get another deadline that is ignored. Repeat x3. Is this just (1) par for the course, (2) a bad recruiter, or (3) a red flag for the company in general?
