Recreate aspects you like from other spots. Watch a lot of award winning commercials, take elements you like from them, and repurpose them. Early on especially, you have to learn to mimic (it's not stealing, don't worry) to develop your own taste and idea-shorthands.
Improv and sketch will definitely help as well. You'll learn how to make strong, specific choices in a collaborative spirit and develop your instinct for how others will perceive your ideas.

ALL OF WHAT AD1 SAID
Improv is something every creative should experience and participate in one point or another in my opinion. It helps people throw caution to the wind and get used to the back and forth in a creative process. I grew up watching sketch comedy and standup so I have a huge appreciation for the craft. Definitely brush up on that too.
Find out what your partner uses for inspiration and do a deep dive into it so you can figure out where they’re coming from. If you find spots or short films that move you, save them. Research what your partner loves and look into the stuff they aren’t familiar with. Provide a balance to the team.
For me personally, I’m a strong conceptual thinker and comedic writer but when it comes to informational or heartfelt writing I struggle. I took a few story boarding classes and it helped me illustrate my ideas in a quick fashion to my teammate.
Sounds like you’re a great partner and a team player, keep it up!
For me I watch a ton of movies and shows. Like a new film every other day kind. I now have a bank of references in my brain if needed. It’s really handy when you brainstorm scenes with your partner.
The fact that you’re self-aware and so eager to contribute is huge! And honestly the first and most important step in being a great partner. What people have said above is correct— study good ads. Check out this great ad history resource someone put together and start making your way down the list. Take your faves and transcribe the VO. You’ll start to form your taste the more you watch. It’s so great. Sorry I can’t remember who put it together to give them credit here, but kudos af to them.
I’ve considered improv and maybe taking screenwriting classes, but if any of you have advice or felt similar feelings, I’d love to hear your experience. It just hurts feeling like I’m always the weaker link in the partnership, and I want to be better.
