Always work on something until you can stop in a place where it's easy to pick back up. When someone interrupts, Ddont be afraid to ask if you can get some time to wrap up a thought.
Know what time of the day you can be most focused (for me it was in the am before my partner came in) and plan your hardest stuff for then.
Leave yourself calendar reminds or block out a window when you know something urgent will come in
Start with high visibility areas then work down. Push down work to support teams and whoever else you can.
Key thing for me is focus. Since there’s so many distractions when you’re on multiple projects, I sometimes just close my email (usually during a lunch hour) and just take an hour to actually finish something.
Turn off the notifications for emails in the bottom corner. That gets too distracting and overwhelming. Then I agree with the above — start with highest visibility first (responding to clients/superiors) and anything needed to get other people utilized (it helps take things off your plate as well). If there’s something that absolutely has to be done by a certain time, block off time in your calendar to get it done.
Thank you! I like the idea of blocking some time off/shutting my emails and focusing on just one thing. A lot of times if I see an email for something else, my mind wanders off from the task at hand.
I make a list for each project of what needs to be done and try to give it an amount of time I think it will take (and write this down either on the post it notes on my desktop or on my white board). Then I have a clear view of what I can work on for each project if I only have a 1 hour window, for example
I try to focus on one project a day if possible. I start with my to do list and just prioritise the “must dos” then remainder is devoted to one project
Keeping a spreadsheet which tracks progress on a lot of the general areas/required work papers for each engagement was essential when I was taking care of multiple engagements and recommending staff to update for areas they worked on since I didn’t have to have like 20 audit files open at once to check their progress
