How can I start planting the seed for a long overdue raise during the pandemic?

Reflect on and make a mental list of your performance over the last year / since you last got a raise/promotion as well as your key contributions or instances where you are doing the job of the person above you. Also think of your career goals and where you want to be in X period of time (in terms of salary, the position, etc.). Be realistic about progression/compensation in the context of your role, how well you perform, and what your company can bear. If you are comfortable discussing salary with colleagues, try to gauge what others are earning in the same or a similar role. If you can’t talk to colleagues and need to find out an appropriate number for your position/skills, check Glassdoor or even post about it on here, usually people are pretty willing to help out or share info. Then, set up a catch-up call on your boss’s calendar at a time when it is appropriate to discuss your performance (for ex., you may have a formalized review process at your company but if not, maybe 3 months, 6 months or 1 year after your last discussion). Prep your boss that you’d like to catch up on your performance and also your career goals. Before the meeting, depending on how adamant you are about getting a raise, also think about whether you’d consider finding another job and leaving if the raise does not work out. Determine your boundaries and try to keep them in mind during your discussion. As you are discussing your performance, mention how much you enjoy working for your firm and be sure to (organically) drop in those points you’ve been reflecting on and as the conversation shifts to the future / goals, bring up how you believe you’ve made significant contributions and would like to see if a raise and/or promotion is possible either now or in the near future. If you have a dollar amount or time frame in mind, feel out the conversation and share it if appropriate. Gauge whether it is feasible and try to get them to commit to a specific time by which they will follow up with X person about your proposal or a time when they’ll get back to you with an answer.

@KPMG 1, it depends on your goal. Are you looking to be promoted or just generally want to speak about your performance/goals? I would suggest talking to a mentor or, if you have a good relationship with them, your PML. I don’t think early promos are likely right now given the market (and pretty much all regular promotions are already determined), at least at our firm, but you can have this exact same convo without the reference to dollar amounts and frame the discussion in the context of what is expected at the next level and why you think you are ready for promotion. Alternatively, if you are not quite acting at your next level but want to get a sense of what you need to do in order to get there, you can let your mentor/PML know you would like to be promoted in the next fiscal year and talk about what you can do to get there. You should also be having a year-end discussion at some point in the near future with your PML and can definitely bring up these points. You can also feel free to DM me if you want to talk more about this :)

Is the grass always greener. I’m super happy in my current job. I like my coworkers, I get to do the projects that I want, and I have an all around good support network. I have also built my reputation up enough to the point where I have a lot of flexibility and can control how I work. But sometimes it bothers me knowing that I could leave and get a significant raise. Reading fishbowl it seems like everyone chases money regardless of how happy they are currently

A while ago, my firm gave me great performance review, said I was ready for promo, but didnt have the necessary months at level. Client took the chance, offered me a promo and pay raise. So I left. I have been killing it, everyone agree I am "ready" for yet another promo but need more time and experience for the next level. So client subsidiary offered me that promo and pay raise, and now they are surprised I am leaving, what did they expect? Lol

I’m a Senior 2 high performer in Tax and am happy with my current job/coworkers. But I know that if I never leave EY, I’ll be underpaid compared to outside hires. I don’t want to leave EY for another firm, because I don’t want to have to rebuild my reputation and network. The thought has crossed my mind to apply to another Big 4 firm and get an offer from them and bring it to EY to ask for a pay raise (essentially say “match it or I’ll leave”). Has anyone ever done this? What was the response?
