Squats! Start with body weight squats, then goblet squats, then barbell squats, and then start adding weight to the barbell.
I would stick with high rep sets so you’re not overloading yourself too much and getting a nice cardio hit from it too. I would also urge working on your knee, hip, and ankle flexibility (Tom Merrick’s videos on YouTube help) so you can take squat correctly and limit any added stress to your back when barbell squatting.
This is what I have done (even with an iffy lower back) and my wife is constantly complementing my backside, like way too much.
