How can utilization encourage efficiency? I have a 30hr code and I finished the work in 5hr. If I charge 5, the write up gives credit to the partner and my utilization suffers.

Charge 30

like

It doesn’t. I started my career being very efficient relative to my peers. My reviews even stated that. My utilization was below target and I got a mediocre rating and raise.

like

Same here. It’s bs

like

It can’t. We need a fee based approach to replace time and expense engagements (many law firms are adopting this) and our current utilization system. It’s a win-win for partners and staff as long as partners price the work correctly. ^ at least for relatively uniform engagements ($1M consulting codes wouldn’t work here).

like

I had the same concern earlier in my career and now after 13 years with the firm, I can see how utilization works in this system. Say you spent 4 hours on the work while someone spent 8 on the same work, the firm would make the same amount of money in a fixed fee engagement. Your contribution to the firm is not any greater than the other person unless you choose to use the leftover 4 hours to do more work.

like

Charge the whole thing. Play the system and it’s game. Work on other things to increase it so that your day looks like 20+

Well there are some seriously unfortunate opinions in here. Actually face palm level unfortunate. Utilization, as I use it and as I rate people, is just a tool to direct resources toward revenue generating opportunities. If you charge 30 and it takes you 5 I would have you tossed. It’s a complete disregard for the efficient operation of the company. The write-offs or credits are all cost accounting standard to actual variances that are not real dollars. They don’t make the firm any more or less money on fixed fee engagements which a vast majority are. I expect you to charge what you work and if you are out of work to tell me so I can find you more. That is not to ask you to work more hours than another individual but to maximize revenue generation given a set of hours. As a corollary, if the projects don’t time right and your utilization is lower then it is my job to defend your quality and performance in reviews and chalk up utilization to timing. I’ve done round tables for years and that argument always sticks as long as I can justify the quality, efficiency and performance.

EY5, Again, that’s the reality. In an ideal world your logic makes perfect sense. We just don’t live in a perfect world. I’ve seen the opposite of what you say far too often

Everyone who is saying it is a fixed cost is missing the point. If we have 20 staff, each of which are a fixed cost of $60K, the. We are incurring $1.2M of Staff comp (excluding benefits, OH, etc). If each of them is charging 40 hours a week when they could be done in 30 with 10 left to work on other things, then we are leaving money on the table. We could either get the same amount of work done with 15 staff, and save $300K by reducing headcount, or we could take on 33% more work since there is additional capacity in the system. And the staff who gets things done more efficiently and then helps out on other projects definitely gets noticed in the round tables/leadership review.

When I was a first year I got the realest advice I've ever heard from a supervisor: "The only prize you get for finishing early is someone's else's work". Do with that what you will 🤷‍♀️

We have a “no work available” job code that has no effect on an individual’s utilization metrics. It’s for reasons just like this - bad budgeting and not having enough work. In reality, just play the game. If they gave you 30 hours and you’re sitting around then just charge the damn hours. It’s way better to be fully utilized and ON budget than the alternative of being under budget and under utilized right?

like

I haven’t heard anyone at our office being roasted for utilization only. With that said, charging it as it’s budgeted is the safest since no one can say you are not doing your job, and you don’t get asked taking other people’s half done work, because believe me when you take over other people’s crap and make if a halfway crap, they’ll blame you not the culprit. If the goal is to stay mediocre and actually have some work life balance, just do what you are asked. If you want to excel, then yeah ask for more work, get 7% raise instead of 4%

like

Your open time would just get scheduled on a different project?

Wait for the review and wrap up to happen. The testing is prolly just one part of what you were budgeted for

I always keep open lines of communication on how long I think things will take, if we were able to increase efficiencies, etc. And am in touch with peers and managers to see if they need help. If the higher ups know you're nothing but hustle, they will advocate for you and you'll get credit you deserve 👍
