Showing an interest in their lives isn't just something that one cop can do, or one teacher, it has to be everyone in their community. That's the only chance we have to make enough of an impact that their lives won't continue on their current trajectories. My job is really awful in most ways, but I can make a difference in some kids' lives, which makes it worth something at least.
It's not on us, it's on social programs to provide the support, entertainment, and education they need to stay out of trouble. We're already doing the best we can with what we have. All we have the budget for is putting out fires, not preventing them from being started.
I disagree. Every interaction we have with the public matters and has an impact. It's up to you what that impact is. It's never too late.
We need more boots on the ground, more patrol officers, more of a visible presence in these kids' daily lives. Which is sadly the opposite of the direction a lot of cities are going.
"Boots on the ground" is aggressive phrasing. We're not at war with these juveniles. Trying to keep them from entering the system should be the goal but not by scaring them just because we're a visual deterrent. Not saying let them go but diversion with the right support system is very successful.
We're making a difference every time we don't let them get away with breaking the law. Chances are they will never come back and say thank you, and they won't even realize that you had a part in it, but most of them will eventually turn their lives around. Letting them get away with petty crimes is not the way to fix things. That just teaches them to be sneaky. So yeah, do your job, you know?
