How come post-MBA consulting starting salaries are no where near BigLaw starting salaries (~190k)?

I graduated b-school last year at the same time as my girlfriend graduated law school and went into big law. While big law has higher base, total comp is very close, in fact I made more and was in school for one less year. The trade off is travel vs extra big law hours. We do far more interesting work also.

How many hours does your gf work a week? Which city and practice area?

Obtaining a JD, and passing the bar, is actually pretty difficult. A tremendous amount of subject matter expertise is required. Compare that to an MBA, which is unquestionably the easiest masters degree to obtain (and a masters thesis isnt even required, which is why some schools don’t even hood their MBA grads). Literally anyone with an undergrad degree and a heartbeat can get an MBA. That all being said, the legal market is, and has been for quite some time, saturated. Those big law jobs are hard to come by, and for every single person clearing the kind of money you are talking about, there are 2-3 people trying to land jobs at local D.A.’s other less prestigious posts making $50k a year with a tremendous amount of law school debt. It’s a rough racket

They actually have a skill set in big law

170 vs 190, I wouldn’t say that is “nowhere near”.

BigLaw is also way more miserable, and has lower trajectory.

likefunny

Because they have an actual license plus master school. You just get a MBA, and the majority of work is outsourced.

* Juris Doctor, not masters.

Way less of the law students get to big law salaries. A much larger percentage of B School students get good salaries. Also I-banking and buyside comp in general blow that number out of the water.

Because lawyers actually contribute something of value whereas consultants are just recent grads churning out pretty PowerPoints with abstract powerpoints that could frankly get ignored. Law matters.

likefunny

LMAO you must have no idea what big law is.

like

I don’t understand what you mean. I only have a bachelors and am making $180k as a consultant.

like

Law school also another year and another $70k in debt.. plus agree with above, lawyers actually know stuff.

I started at ~220K post my MBA... and so did everyone who went to MBB, ATK, S&, LEK, etc from my class

KPMG1 - upper limit for us is is 238k, at an exceeds rating I ended up with 218

75 a week is average, but can hit 100 in tough times. M&A. City will give away too much of my identity.

Wat

Dunno I make a lot more than my friends who went into biglaw - their path to partnership is longer, their odds less certain. If they get there they’ll make more than me long run and more power to them.

Thanks all, appreciate the insight. I asked because I’ve been working for 6 years and make 140k (no MBA). Someone in my family whose never held a real job before, is in their mid-30s, ended up going to a mid-tier law school with a full scholarship and landed an offer for 190k in big law. I’m happy for them, but it left me a little salty since I always thought I wanted to be a lawyer but never pursued given the oversaturated job market scare, etc. so I feel like I limited by earning potential year over year by not pursuing a top MBA, or law school.

Yah if you can pass the bar, vlookups not going to inhibit your career path.

Can somebody please explain to me why MBB and other top consulting firms are so adamant that you have an MBA? I majored in accounting, finance, and operations management at a top 10 undergrad business school and then got my masters in information systems from the grad school program. I took multiple MBA courses as electives when getting my masters and it seemed like those classes were very basic and easy.
