Because diversity of thought doesn’t look good in a press release image. How do you optically show diversity of thought? You can’t.
Nobody that claims they’re for diversity actually wants diversity of thought, because when you get it, too many people freak the fuck out and want HR on speed dial because they can’t be in the same building as someone thinking differently.
This app is a perfect example of it. Mentions of conservative thought end up in a cacophony of “Nazi” etc.
👏👏👏
Mostly bc those doing the talking have a shallow view of what diversity really means.
How come we never consider the disabled when talking about diversity? Only gender and/ or race?
Simplified version: Diversity of gender and race is on trend at the moment and can be measured.
OP - at that point, the agency is doing it to make themselves look good.
Two reasons:
If your brief is to target an audience with background(s) that don’t match your current staff, the notion is recruiting someone with the same background(s) as the target gives you an insightful POV and reflects the interest of the target.
The second reason is that agencies do this because it makes them look good as an organization. The problem we have now is that POC’s do get recruited, but not many will ever reach management. That problem needs to be addressed.
Or even consider diversity of socioeconomic background...
Bottom line of a business is profit. Efficiency is a great, simple way to keep operating costs down - re: the ability to complete tasks/projects quickly. When you have diversity of thought, there's more opinions and perspectives on how to approach a challenge, which slows the process down because you need to spend more time on discourse and alignment. A well-oiled machine is one that doesn't disagree. Hence 'cultural fit'. I've been disinvited to meetings/laid off/rotated off projects because I asked questions, brought up different ways of approaching it, or bring in new audiences we should consider. I wish we were there, but we're not quite there yet.
PS/ Creatives dislike strategists who nitpick on their ideas for seemingly miniscule things but that in essence is diversity of thought as well (and vice versa). Creatives are trained to look for one thing, strategists look for something else, accounts etc. I love teams where opinions are challenged but acknowledged as valid.
This thread is becoming a good case study for diversity of thought. Respecting people’s different view points - even about diversity of thought - IS embracing diversity of thought. You don’t have to agree nor shove your opinions onto others. Even agreeing to disagree is ok. Listening and having respectful discourse are part of embracing “diversity of thought.” In the end, it promotes individual and societal growth. Think about it. 😊
Dude, this is NOT a good look. Cloak it any what you want, it’s still not a good look.
Who are you talking to
Diversity in gender and race automatically brings diversity of thought due to diversity of human experience and culture based on those factors. And then nationality / immigrant diversity is also important.
Physical ability is more closely related to everyday power and privilege (that most able bodied people of all backgrounds do not realize they have) than diversity of thought per se.
