How common is a strict attorney PTO policy, particularly among small-mid size firms? I thought the “just get your shit done” approach was common, but at my new job I have two weeks (10 days).

I know we have a PTO policy officially, but I couldn’t tell you how much PTO I have. When you bill 2000+ hours people don’t seem to care.

My place is “get your shit done right, on time, and get your billables, other than that we do not care.”

Every firm I've been at has technically had some set PTO amount for attorneys but it has never been tracked and nobody has ever cared. Just get your shit done and your hours billed.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a strict attorney PTO policy. That sounds rough.

Do they allow you to rollover to next year?

I should mention I have an additional five “sick” days (paid), but don’t use sick days often and don’t feel good about lying about it to use it as typical PTO. But more generally was just curious how common these policies are for attorneys.

Do they payout unused vacation days when you leave?

It's not uncommon to have a defined vacation day accrual policy then. Chances are the firm will not be strict about going over if you're getting the work done. You should check with your colleagues.

I am facing this same issue. My firm has it so that you have to take PTO for doctors’ appointments, etc. Does not make any sense to me as a salaried employee.

My firm is like this. 5 PTO for the year, but no vacation until after 1 yr of work. Thereafter, 5 days of vacation not to be consecutively used with a PTO day or vacation or PTO to be used consecutively with holidays.

Oh yes. That’s why I’m actively job searching!

We get 20 days of PTO, which encompasses sick leave, vacation, etc. In addition, 5 days of PTO can be rolled over to the next year for a max accrual of 25 days.

I accepted a new job, they said PTO was “generous.” I find out it’s 19 days a year of PTO (which includes sick days). I have two young children and we like to vacation 1-2x a year (no more than a few days away each time). Am I crazy that this is pretty limited time off? 8 of the normal holidays off during the year (working the week between Christmas and NYE). Thoughts? I dont know if lack of PTO is a good reason to back out, is it?

Another laid off case here. Anyone moving out of US considered keeping the 401K as is instead of withdrawing? Any pros / cons to keep in mind ? Pro I see is no penalty and the fact that it'll continue to grow till I turn 65. Con is that it's a decent size amount in my case and I might need some if that cash if I don't get a job soon 🙄
