I’d advise not to worry about what ECs look good. Worry about finding causes that you are actually passionate about as that will lead to you naturally bringing more impact to the cause. I personally serve on a non profit focused on young children education and mentor inner city kids. I could care less if adcoms thinks it’s impressive or not, I do it because I think both the causes are important to my community.

Such a myth imo. I don’t think it matters for a large majority of applicants. What I did was do a single pro-bono engagement on Catchafire just in case is checked a box

I did. At Booth now. Fwiw did not get into HBS, but I also came from a no-name consulting firm. My personal hypothesis is that the exceptions are the people who do something incredibly impactful with tangible results (e.g., start a non-profit that provided $1m of food to starving people), who deservedly get a big boost. I just don’t buy that volunteering 20 hours of your time over 3-5 years to do something nice moves the needle

Imo, and depending on your demo, I think it’s more of a check the box. I’d try to at least get involved in something but you don’t have to start a foundation given your work experience
Thanks! That's basically what I was also wondering. Whenever people talk about ECs, it's always things like "started a foundation" or "sat on the board of a charity", which given the consulting lifestyle, I'm not sure how people manage to do!
What kind of ECs look good?
I used a few of my extra 10’s (pro bono consulting, student mentoring), as well as the the extra-curriculars I did during my undergrad. I got into W + one other M7 with that, and applied/interviewed for a second M7.
Yeah happy to chat :)

There's no data to back up M1's claim that ECs are crucial. In fact, it's the most overrated component of an application. There was a poll of actual adcoms where they put a weight on each component and ECs were like 3rd last (same weighting as undergrad major and stuff like that).
It's a slightly more important aspect for folks who are working 30 hours a week or something, not MBB.
You DO want to have something that distinguishes you from the rest of MBB, but (1) this really only applies to H/S and W a bit - M7 is VERY high chance coming from North American MBB. (2) there are other ways ways distinguish that are more meaningful, like fast track promotions, LOR, story.
I know someone from T2 who was in the worst demographic possible and had 0 ECs...but he was fast tracked. Goes to W now.

Btw OP, here's the breakdown for importance of different factors (ECs is 6%). It's not perfect but this is much more directionally accurate than anecdotes and myths:

Very. Schools need to know why you’re better than another person in your MBB class and they have no idea beyond promotion speed and ECs. They’re not going to rack and stack your project experience cause it’s not possible to compare. Your peers have done ECs. Look to them for inspiration.

M1 this is pretty much a myth, especially outside of H/S
Yeah my ECs weren’t too exciting or anything either, I had some in undergrad and then mentioned any firm initiatives I’ve been on + some volunteering
