How did it feel to pass the 100k mark in salary?

It felt great! It happened when I made a career switch into Consulting. I was in the military before, so the amount of pay I was getting for the number of hours I had to work (especially as a commander) was pretty terrible (~$75k with 100hr weeks). Additionally, everyone at the same level was paid the same, regardless of your output and quality of work and only 1-3% of people could promote 1 year early. So, no fast tracks for top performers. After I left the military and finished grad school, I more than doubled my salary. It felt great and feels great to know I’m being paid commensurate with my skills, ability, and contribution. Income certainly doesn’t define a person or indicate their worth, but it sure does feel good to get a fair wage for a change. 😃

Really depends on context. Making 100k in HCOL felt good to say I made 6 figures but in reality it would still be an uphill battle to afford the life I want. When I transitioned to tech I went from 125k to 300k overnight and it felt great for a few months until I realized that I now had a new tier of peers to compare myself too and they made even more now. There is always a ladder to climb if you are going to make comp chasing a major part of your ambition and identity

Exciting for a few minutes.

About one day of excitement and an occasional smile when I think about it.

Felt pretty great. I enlisted in the army before college, so my early 20s were spent making absolute crap money (like 20k). Didn’t graduate from school until I was 27 I hit $100k at 30 and felt like I finally caught up to, and even surpassed, many of the people I knew growing up. Now I’m 34 and I’m at $150k. Feel like for the first time in my life money isn’t really a concern anymore

Good until inflation hit and prices on everything jumped. it’s like I’m exactly where I was, except I would have been experiencing a decrease in salary if I didn’t jump.

like

Good but not as good as hitting 1mil+ in networth. I think one should focus on networth/asset building and using a high w-2 salary as building blocks to a networth that really gives you peace of mind.

D9, biggerpockets is a great resource on real estate investing. All the stuff they put is quality. They recently put out a book on multifamily invesy...well.worth the $$ and time.

$100k is the new $50k. Meh

Anticlimactic. It was more exciting when I was much younger and my paycheck was over $1000 for the first time.

I’m very curious - did you all experience lifestyle creep once you hit 100k? Personally - not really, except I had more expenses just from being older

like

A very slight uptick in spending for activities / experiences, which my gf was interested in and wanted to do, but that's about it. Still the same ole frugal / financially prudent self I've always been.

I officially surpassed 100k today. Transferred from GPS to Commercial and negotiated a raise from 88k to over 100k. Let’s go! 🥳

Yeehaw! 🤠

Almost nothing. Same for $200k. Maybe I’m just burned out, but the hedonic treadmill is a blessing and curse of the human condition.

like

$100k is the new $40k, so not as life changing as I thought.

Awesome. I was at 70K and had trouble saving. When I doubled my comp with a move it felt like cheating how quickly the savings stacked up.

May i ask where you went? And what industry did you go to?

I got 1% hike that year in industry and the hike% killed the joy of 100k milestone. I still went ahead and had a grand lunch with my wife

likefunny

I did it with my lemonade stand when I was 8. I was pretty popular for awhile but selling rare earth metals helped push me into the tens of millions which was almost as exciting.

funnylike

Maybe exciting for the first few days (hit it when I turned 27), but it wore off quickly. Once I hit 250 base, that’s when I def feel I can relax and actually enjoy it (hopefully that’ll be in the next 5-8 years).

like

Honestly once I reached Tc of 200k I have been incredibly care free (didn’t have student loans). I live in HCOL city w/o a care in the world with my income (now 230 TC) so I don’t think you’ll need 250 base

like

100k felt great! I was young and really proud to have gotten to "six figures" considering my first job out of undergrad was just shy of 50k.

like

Anticlimactic. Went from a job that paid 90k + RSUs to one that paid 120k base with no stocks/options, so unclear when I actually passed the mark. 150k felt like much more of a milestone and was exciting to feel like I was finally making progress!

like

I’ll feel better at 150k

like

It was fine. I don't worry about money much (cause I invest etc.) But once I'm passed 200k I'll feel more stable so I can focus on other life things more.

like

O nice congrats! What role did you go to in tech? Still in change/org I imagine?

Ehhh that’s my first job tho

If someone can verify this? I have seen so many posts here and on Quora too, that TCS release the salary structure breakup after the interview rounds, but do not send the offer letter, even after acceptance of salary. The HR person won't deny you on the face, but keep on delaying that offer letter release would take time. Is this true? Do a reputed company like TCS make such fake promises or raise false hopes in candidates?
