How did you go about finding a mentor? I am 25 and would love to have a mentor at this point in my life and career.

The formula: give give give, ask.
1. Invite someone senior, preferably on your team, for a “virtual coffee” over zoom on a Friday. If it’s another team or department, you will have to show your interest in what they do.
2. Ask about their career path, their hobbies, and some deals they’re working on. Research the deal as well as something interesting about their hobby, and keep it in the back of your mind. Do not ask for advice (yet).
3. Check in a month later by email on a Friday, and follow up on the deal you talked about earlier. See if they will be doing xyz hobby, bonus points if you bond over this.
4. The following week see if they have some time in the evening hours to chat on the phone. By then you should have offered interesting ideas, created trust, and built rapport. Most Partners and MDs genuinely want to develop young talent, but only if it’s worth their time. On this call, ask for guidance on your career, and make it clear where you want to be. Most likely it will be generic advice but the important thing is that you listen and maintain the connection. Ask if this can be a regular thing where you update them on your progress every quarter.
5. Remember that it’s not about you, it never was. Forget LinkedIn, this is the “work” in “network.”

Incredible reply. Thank you.

Literally go to LinkedIn find a group you want to join and comment on there. Try Facebook groups wherever people who want to meet people meet people. Here is a great start 😀

There are many associations with mentorship programs. In the financial services there is the CFA institute. I would look up industry associations in your profession and see if you can find a program.

Your alumni affairs team may serve as a great resource. Also, consider exploring the Firsthand platform.

Ok so I just saw a bunch of beautiful portfolio websites and want to redo mine. Plenty of print work, minimal film work. Besides using the brand logo as a thumbnail, what else can I do on the portfolio landing page? The websites I saw have thumbnails borrowed from the work but my work doesn’t lend itself to that. Any suggestions?

To those of you who don’t want to live in London forever, I’m really interested to know what your career plans are - even if it involves moving industry.

I personally can’t see myself living in London for the next ten years, and it’s making me feel like all of this is for nothing.
