How did you guys pick accounting for a profession/career? For me, I loved numbers since I was young. Then I had a high school and college internship during busy season that helped decide my future.

Had the notion that the big money to be made was where the money was actually made, so I wanted to work at the Fed. Went to school for finance and my advisor talked me into adding accounting as it was just an extra semester. Learned I did not really like anything the Fed did and my school was a feeder for Big4/PA. It was easy to get a job in Big4 and have stayed since then.

Originally i wanted to double major in accounting and finance to get to 150 credits. I couldnt do finance, it was not for me. Accounting was easier for me though

A family friend hooked it up with an internship while I was a sophomore in college. Can't complain - went from working at a supermarket making like $10 an hour to making $20 an hour when I was 19. I was ballin out compared to my other teenager friends. Plus I got a few extra years of experience compared to my professional peers. I just aligned my schooling with my internship, made valuable connections in the industry and haven't looked back.

like

Same i used to worked at a supermarket Traded my uniform for a dress shirt and tie Yeah I made more than my friends. Had internship and jobs in accounting. Definitely networking at a young age helped me in this profession. Ex: Linkedin

I looked at Salaries and it was higher than most of the other majors I looked at so I picked it

like

That is a good point. I had classmates that majored in finance at the School of Business but could not get a job after graduating. I am talking about smart 4.0 gpa finance majors vs. 3.0-3.5 gpa accounting majors that went into public accounting. Of all the majors offered at the School of Business, accounting was the hardest but had a better career path early on

Just wanted a stable job that would always be in demand and offer different career paths.

like

Yeah a job in accounting was definitely stable and in high demand. My mom wanted me to work in an office wearing dress shirt and tie and that use my strengths in math and numbers

like

I didn’t major in accounting, never considered it in the least. I was in politics, and a partner at a firm offered me a job after we worked together on a campaign they were advising. I took the job because, well, I needed one at the time. And then eventually learned how to audit, etc., and self-studied for the CPA and passed all the sections. The rest is history.

like

I have a lot of colleagues that majored in poly sci and econ that became accountants. A lot of them took extra courses in accounting. It’s funny how life works out

uplifting

Started out Pre-Pharmacy and was planning to become a pharmacist but hated chemistry in college so I switched to Pre-Business and my Principles of Accounting professor said Accounting is your lane. So I stuck with it. But absolutely hate it some days 😂🤣

likefunny

At least with accounting, you wont have much or any student loans at all. At least you know in college that if you failed a major core class, you had time to pick another major Yeah you got to either love or hate accounting, no in between

I did well at the accounting courses in college, and then I looked into the unemployment numbers and salaries by major haha.

like

I liked my accounting courses in college. Accountants were definitely in high demand

I took a high school accounting class and my teacher previously had been in accounting and said he took a 70% paycut to teach since it was more family friendly than working in accounting. I enjoyed the class and the pay seemed good so I kept with it

like

Agreed the pay is good. Though money isnt everything. Once i retire, i plan on teaching accounting to the next generation

I took an accounting class in high school and loved it, so I decided to major in accounting.

like

No internship. I worked for a life insurance company for a couple of years and then delivered pizzas until I graduated from college. Went to work for the IRS after I graduated.

You loved numbers? Ha, what a nerd

likefunny

I wouldnt say i was a nerd I loved math and counting things It made sense to go into accounting

Alphabetically the first option at my college. Should have started at the bottom and I’d be a zookeeper.

funnylike

Nah being a zookeeper would have been awesome! Go to different zoos, travel, bonding with animals Though during tax season i feel it is sometimes a zoo itself

My previous roommate’s boyfriend told me if I major in accounting, I will get a job at least. He was right but now I feel like I went too deep… a little bit regret lol

like

Are you feeling burn out? I mean you got to love your summers. Just busy season and extension busy season. I hope it gets better because you can change career paths or accounting will help your next career

I was hungover on pick a major day

funny

Best story ever! Let me guess you picked the top which was accounting?

I loved math, wanted a stable job, and career tests somehow listed it as being right for me. I actually did not enjoy my accounting classes but I stuck it out because I didn’t know what else to do. It’s okay overall but it’s definitely not something I want to do long-term.

like

Same with me, i loved math, knew accounting was in demand, and enjoyed my time during tax season for my high school internship. With accounting, you can go into different types in the long run. Go into other fields of business. If you have your CPA, everyone looks up to you or something in the business world

I didn’t choose the thug life… the thug life chose me.

funny

Got to count em beans

Didn’t want to do any STEM fields because they never interested me; so i picked business. 1 of my accounting friends wanted to work for the fbi; another is gonna get his CPA, which supposedly makes a lot of money. So i went with them as well

like

Intermediate 1 & 2 were the worse

Took accounting in high school was semi decent so i majored in it and went to work in tax

like

I like it always something out there to learn so many different options to go into. If you dm happy to share more

Job for fresher or internship? In JavaScript or PHP. My wife has completed Master's in Math (2019). She wants to start her career in IT. Many companies asks to complete some assignment in some framework, like code igniter or some other. I think, as a fresher this is little bit tricky at the beginning.

Articling student in Canada (8 month internship with potential hireback), currently doing transactional work. I’m WFH and having a hard time building relationships with partners. I’m friendly/chat with associates and am on great terms with one partner who gives me work often, but not much else. The firm “encourages” reaching out to partners to chat, though I’ve tried and been essentially ignored. Partners rarely have enough time to give me feedback, so I feel they don’t have time to chat.

From talking to students at multiple M7 schools, it seems like all of the BB/MBB/FAANG companies recruit at most if not all of the schools . So if you're planning on recruiting for one of these, is there really a major difference in career opportunities between each school? Asking because it seems like some schools are specifically known for finance vs consulting vs tech, but if the companies are all recruiting at all these schools, the differences don't seem as pronounced to me.

I’m a data engineer/engineering manager by trade and massively screwed up by going into MBB consulting, I absolutely despise it and am looking to leave about 8 months in. I have a great offer from a fortune 50 for product management in tech at a similar salary, way more RSU’s but can’t shake off the thought that I wouldn’t be an engineer anymore. For those who were at mid-tier firms and have left PA/are interviewing, did you feel that your exit opportunities were limited due being at a mid-tier? I’m genuinely curious as I’ll be joining a mid-tier and I am coming from a regional firm. Hoping to pay my dues for another 2-3 years to get senior promotion and get my CPA (halfway done) then exit PA. Don’t really want to hop into B4 but everyone always talks about the B4 prestige being a huge resume booster.

I’m struggling to see the value of a MBA as a consultant. If you come back to consulting, you lose career progression. You can’t really go to PE/VC from MBA with a consulting background only.
