I’m learning a lot about this because I’ve been interviewing at some in house companies. Everywhere is a little different, but majority of places consider their Art Directors to be very senior level. Typically the people who are ADs in-house started out in house as junior graphic designers, worked up to senior graphic designers, then promoted to AD, the ADs tend to manage a team of designers as well. So if you’re a junior then you’d prob start as a junior designer and move up form there. One thing to note as well when talking to in companies is that bigger brands tend to have creative departments that are split up. They’ll have a team of ADs/designers just for the website, one team for organic social, one for marcom (least exciting), package design, and one for campaigns (which is the most fun in my opinion) etc. I’m finding in house companies pay A LOT more and the hours are much much better, also meeting a lot of cool people from different backgrounds while interviewing which I really enjoy. Personally after only 4 years in a well known large agency, I’m done I won’t go back. Entertaining two offers this week to go in house and I think I’d recommend it to young creatives trying to decide where to go. Idk though, ask me again in 6 months lol. You have to do what’s best for you, remember that!! Good luck to you!!

Congrats! That’s awesome! Yeah I’ve been hearing that in-house has better hours & more WL balance. I have personal/side projects that I really care about. I’m afraid working as a junior at an agency will take up too much of my time. But my design skills are not the strongest so Idk if I can make it in-house as a designer.

For those that have left the Big 4 as a Senior Manager (Tax) and went in-house, do you regret it? Anything you wish you knew or you would share with someone that’s in a similar position? I love the work but the volume/lack of work-life balance is not something I’m okay with right now. I recently had a kid and want to spend time on weekend and nights without feeling guilty or a pay cut.

What time do you guys arrive at the client Monday morning?

I’ve been trying to get some graphic design side projects to potentially pivot to self-employed designer. I think I have a competitive portfolio, but I’m having a hard time finding gigs. I tried Fiverr, but it is hard to compete with the prices they charge there. I know many people in the field, as I hang out mostly with designers and creatives, but not many people that could be a client. Any advice?
