McKinsey & Company Bain & Company Hey everyone -
Not the exact right bowl, but looking for advice/referrals for a close family friend trying to break into ESG/climate change/sustainability consulting.
They have ~7 YOE in finance (mostly junk debt, some S&T) and 20 YOE in development banking at an IGO (think World Bank, doing everything from public debt offerings, infrastructure, etc. all w heavy ESG/compliance requirements).
Thanks for the help!

This thread is sort of dead but there’s a good amount of misinformation here. The unfortunate reality is that unless you make it to HBS/GSB there’s is a slim to none chance you can hit PE/VC without any pre-MBA relevant experience. Even at those two schools you have an uphill battle. Also, the only consulting firms that place in PE/VC with any regularity are MBB or firms that do a lot of CDDs (us, LEK, S& deals, OW). Your best bet is to go to IB if you are truly set on this career path
Re: latter part of your Q, I’d aim for a top 3-5 US program and perhaps Berkeley. Space is super difficult to crack sans connections and/or super relevant experience imo
Jump to an investment bank. Then, it’s easy least.
Difficult. Their hiring needs are slim so they get enough applicants from bankers anyway. The few consultants who slip in why not take from MBB? For MBA do some research and check out employment reports?
Banks always want young Analysts, it’s the easiest route.
Why VC or PE? I know folks who want to do it for the chance to evaluate startups and make investment decisions, but corporate VC does that too with more benefits and (usually) less risk to you based on the investment outcome. Just food for thought
P-EY, any advice for jumping to an IB pre-MBA?
Target MMs for sure. BBs probably won’t want anything to do with you unless you’re MBB. Hopefully you have some sort of transaction/strategy/finance background, otherwise it will be an uphill battle. Start shooting off networking emails like crazy. Good luck
