Does anybody have any advice when applying to postings with many applicants and getting noticed? The company I am interested in is Figma, and though I reached out to a few technical recruiters after applying through LinkedIn, I am wondering if there might be something more I could do that maybe I’m not thinking about. Also along those lines, if anybody here works for figma I would love the chance to connect

I would say this, and make sure you're having active conversations about your development, the role and business goals etc
It can take a while, from what I remember. What are your long-term plans?
Yeah, I feel you there. Sometimes going elsewhere feels like the only way to get a promotion on your own time instead of waiting for your company.
It is completely random as L5 to L6 simplified promo committee relies on a handful of senior people in your own org. If you are in high performing org with high bar, it can take years. While in a less technical org with mostly people management (like managing contractors) the management chain can promote very quickly to L7 or even L7. As the managers that have been promoted this way do it alike. So no global answer and rules are completely unfair but that's the way it is.
The best thing you can do is talk with your manager about this. You and your manager should have a career growth plan that outlines what your current performance is against the L6 TPM competencies, and your body of work that demonstrates a pattern of performance at L6. That's generally 3-4 successful L6 scope/complexity projects where you have demonstrated most of the L6 competencies. That's what dictates the timeline. You and your manager should walk through these steps together and perform a gap analysis to see how ready you are for promo. Then, when you are close your manager should collect feedback from 4-5 people who are at/above L6 and have worked closely with you and can support your promotion.
