How long have you been practicing? I did plaintiff’s side employment law for 1.5 years and afterward transitioned to defense side. I’d say the longer you’re on the plaintiff-side, the more you’re pigeonholing yourself to that side
I’ve been on Plaintiff’s side employment practice for about 1.2 yrs now. Most of the defense side larger employment law firms kind of reject me based on my years of experience, and mostly, for existing conflicts! Got an offer from an Insurance defense firm and another personal injury firm. But I would ultimately like to return to defense side (employment or so) or to an in house position.
I practiced on the Plaintiff’s side employment law for 1.2 years then transitioned to defense work. A lot of big firms that pay well rejected me at first so I took a pay cut and settled for insurance defense work for another year before transitioning to a large firm that handles only employment law defense work (huge bump in salary). Now, I get endless emails asking me to move defense firms. In my opinion, it is better to transition early then to wait. If you hate defense work and billables, you can always go back to plaintiff’s work.
I am also in California so it might be different for other states.
