At my firm every partner and associate comes directly to me to dump work on and never asks or cares if I’m at capacity 👍🏻
noice. Sending thoughts 🙏
Every firm, practice group, office could be different.
This is the most lawyer response i could have expected
It depends.
unheard of
We have non-attorney staffers that coordinate everything, including confirming that you have capacity. I still get some work directly from partners, but it’s much easier to say no to the staffer.
At my old firm there were assigning partners that allegedly coordinated staffing, but 99% of my assignments still came directly from the partners I worked with regularly.
Downside to this is that there is no motivation for partners and senior associates to be nicer people working underneath them. I don’t think it makes a huge difference but I’ve worked at two firms that use different staffing models and I found that when partners need to get you to do their work, they tend to be a little nicer during the project than when they can hide behind a staffing agent.
Usually things are divided up into smaller practice groups (IP, labor, etc) and whomever is at the head of the practice group either delegates or implements the system for delegating. When I was part of a workers compensation team within the labor and employment practice group, it was 3 attorneys a paralegal and an admin. You can see how it's easier for everyone to know where each other is in that scenario. Also in big law the support staff usually work in a pool as well so if you have a big project you can pull extra paralegals from other areas for help.
