^ It doesn’t except in rare cases. I’ve been producing for 15+ years and there was never an agreement or kickback on my friggin watch. Word gets out about the bad, non-collaborative Directors and they don’t get hired. Especially today with the reduction in content and rise of in-house facilities. Back in the day you could be a dick. Can’t afford to today
Maybe because agencies are hiring directors who have been working on big projects and budgets and years for 80k social posts and they don't give a shit. It's enough money these days with the reduced amount of content for production companies to take the job so they can take home a few grand, but the directors don't care. Maybe award jobs appropriately and the attitude will change.
Agency getting a kickback of some sort in exchange for awarding the job, usually.
Cuz you keep hiring them. And when they suck, you can’t say anything bad about them because you recommended them to your client. Catch 22
And the directors who came up in the "digital age" and are hungry and adept to this sort of content will actually get work. Instead of giving IG Posts to directors who don't care at a 10k day rate.
Kick backs are way old school. I’m 22 years in and have never been offered or even thought to ask for one
It’s cute that some say they stop working. I could name 5+ tyrants very quick that agency’s froth over, who have stayed busy for over 20 years . The theory is perhaps agency loves the drama, it’s harder to say no to a tyrant than it is to say no to a nice person, if your happy you’re not creative , and lastly it’s entertaining and a break from the office to watch a nut job freak out about a cereal commercial.
They eventually don’t
Who ya talking about
But word should get around within the agency and between agencies... I’m talking about directors who are A-list yet refuse to collaborate, are rude on set and mean to their own team. Some of which own their production companies.
OP, directors that own their own companies are generally the ones most likely to grease an agency’s wheels in order to get the job, so to speak. The creatives aren’t usually aware of the behind the scenes agreements, they just get stuck with the director who is “magically” the perfect fit for the job with the perfect treatment and the perfect numbers, even though they have a reputation for being terrible to work with.
Thanks President 1. It’s hard to believe that’s going on at my (big, well-known, tightly controlled) agency but it’s something to think about for sure!
Thanks, SCP1. We just worked with an amazingly lovely director and it was a breath of fresh air. I think we’ll just have to ask around about the folks we have lined up for the next project.
Obviously I don't know what sort of jobs you're talking about, but that's my opinion on a lot of them...
I mean broadcast; big spots.
I feel like the attitude translates but fair enough
A known quantity always has a tremendous advantage
I’m gonna go with budget cuts. You get what you pay for. Additionally, great directors want to take risks. Clients have become severely risk adverse.
News flash. There are really good skilled and seasoned directors that are Hungry with a lot more experience than the YouTube influencer. Just a matter of the copy you are offering 😉
