How do firms calculate how much parental leave to provide, either paid or unpaid. Or do they just pick a number, like “yeah they can get to know their kid in a few weeks and I couldn’t possibly have that attorney out for 12 weeks?” I’m at a small firm, no FMLA or state requirement. We get four weeks paid and four weeks unpaid. Would like to push for more but not sure how to argue costs side of it.

Learned on the day of the deadline to enroll, that my partner's employer offers voluntary participation on a deferred compensation plan. First time I hear of such a benefit/option after working for years! Any general (i.e. not plan-specific) lessons-learned, gotchas, pointers to offer as we will have to quickly decide to enroll or not?

529 Plan VERSUS Prepaid

We live in Florida and currently have a Freshman in High School and a 16 month old. We hear from our friends and family with college bound children "I wish we would have done Florida PrePaid." After obviously ignoring this for years, we are finally trying to do it before "it's too late" for both children.

I know everyone will have different answers for this but how did you know it was time to get sober? I have a somewhat unsteady, gappy work history due to several health issues — serious ones — that have gotten in the way since I passed the bar. My first major health issue I can easily explain as it’s physical, a major concussion. My other health issues are severe depression that affected my ability to work steadily. About to turn down a job offer that would nearly double my salary after speaking to several former associates of the firm and hearing some not so great things. The word “sweatshop” was used multiple times yet I am still having a hard time wrapping my head around it. This is truly “you can’t pay me enough to be part of that” in action.
