I’d approach it as asking about the timeline for a promotion. In industry they are a bit harder to come by, generally there needs to be an opening or business case for it. It isn’t like public accounting where you can get a “promotion” but essentially be doing the same work you did before. Asking for a promotion without any concept of when and how the company promotes shows a lack of understanding and likely immaturity.

like

Yes i agree, it's why i didn't want to ask and look stupid. Basically at my company, my supervisor does the same work as me but he has more authority and he gets to have analysts and i don't. If i get promoted its just a salary bump and I'd have more authority but I'd be doing the same work. They work more at manager level or higher (in my department) and it's better work to be honest.

like

Just go through your thoughts and be honest. Say I’ve worked here x years. I produce quality work. I want to be here but I have ambition to rise the ranks. What’s realistic timeline for promotion? If they’re vague, drill more to get tangible details. Write down timeline and skills they say you need and work towards them. Hit them and if they don’t promote you dip because they aren’t honest

Your firm likely has a rubric of what the performance expectations are for every level. You have to show that you have demonstrated the performance needed to be manager in order to get the promotion.

They just gave me a raise so I think I'm doing well? It's another reason why i don't wanna ask just yet because i don't want them to think I'm greedy or something which I'm totally not i just don't want to be stuck

Do it. I did 13 months in. Wish I did it sooner.

Hey, for our next sync, I’m curious what path to promotion looks like for me.

A manager’s whole job is to grow you and not just focus on getting tasks completed. Almost all of your 1:1 should be about career growth. A project list update is an email oftentimes. I would come prepared at the next 1:1: “I just received a raise and that is great but I’d like to discuss and work with you on my career path here at X company.” Have data/results to show how your work contributed to the department/team/company goals. Did the work you did save the company money or made the company money? Did you create efficiency in a process? Just anything that speaks to “I’m doing alot of work and it’s affecting the bottomline.” Not only will knowing this information boost your confidence, but it will also show your manager you’re serious about more than raises but growth. Good luck!!!

Ditto. Think of it a little bit like an interview (again!); thank them for the raise, and find out, what are the checkbox metrics and timeline are they looking for to promote someone like yourself to a manager role? And then you can bring up what you've done, xyz in the past 6 months / 12 months that falls into these checkboxes, and ask what the remaining timeline and metrics are for you.

What comp can we expect to target after 2 YOE? I’m not miserable in consulting but don’t think I get paid enough. With my promotion in a month, I’ll be hitting 100k and I want to only leave if I can get 110k or more (going for strategy, PM, and a few startup roles). Is that realistic? whens the best time to leave for max comp in the long term?

Hi Fishes, I got a call from a TCS manager last week and he interviewed me saying he received my CV from an external source. He shared his tcs email id, asked me to make minor modifications in the CV and then there will be a client interview. He said he will get back to me. I reached out to him 2 days later and he informed they were evaluating my eligibility with TCS. It has been 4 days since that and I have not heard from them. What does this actually mean? TIA.
