No clue and the older I get, the less I feel it really matters as long don’t wait until you know to do something with your life. An imperfect life lived is better than holding out to maybe live your entire life in one perfect moment. Just my opinion though. Enjoy the process of figuring it out for yourself.

I was told sometimes you have to find out what you don’t like before you find out what you DO like. I just go after jobs that I want and those jobs have usually lasted 2 years and I move onto another job. I think I finally found something I like compared to all the other jobs I’ve had.

Don't worry about figuring out what your perfect next job is. Talk with people in your network about what they do and what they find interesting. If something sounds interesting or exciting, ask them more about it. A lot of times opportunities will open up when you don't expect them. If you aren't happy with that next role, you'll at least have a better idea for next time.

Think outside of your box for your network too. It could be a family friend, someone who left the firm that you had a good relationship with, or someone at a former audit client you really hit it off with. Just tell them you are looking for mentoring opportunities and are wondering if you could set up a 30 minute touch point. If it goes well ask if you can meet every once in a while. I usually meet with a few people quarterly, but you can decide what frequency works best for you.

At the end of the day though, it's just a job, and you're going to get the most fulfillment from the things you do outside of your job. Make sure you make time for those other things!

I second the other poster - stick it out in audit. You don't have to kill yourself and it'll keep a lot of options open for you to choose

Ask yourself these questions:

1. What natural gifts do you have? Are you good with people (sales) or are you more analytical (behind the scenes work)? Do you get a kick out of teaching others (education)?

2. Do you like helping others (client service)? Or are you more focused on your own achievement (non client service like making a product that others sell)?

3. What motivates you? Paying for kids college? Socking away $1 million for yourself? Giving away $1 million to help others? What is the long term goal that will get you out of bed in the morning?

4. Do you like working on only one thing at a time and doing it really well? (Project work like R&D credit studies)? Or do you like variety and having different things going on at once (generalist).

Then look for a career that plays to your strengths. Finance is great for making money but the WHY is the key. Is it for me? Kids? Give it away? Build my dream house? Etc.

The long term goal may change over the years but it is important to ALWAYS have a goal you are working TOWARD. Otherwise the day to day work becomes drudgery.
