How do I get a job that pays better? I’ve only been able to break 55k and I’m 27 years old with a finance degree. I just can’t get a higher salary anywhere…please no mean comments. I’m already down

Job hop. They’re going to be willing to pay you more as an external hire. Not sure what your role is, but apply for larger firms and make sure you do your research on what the market is paying for that role (including crowdsourcing that info here)

like

Grad school was my ultimate salary nitro booster.

At 27 my TC was just probably 90K and I’m currently on track to break 400K. Basically got my MBA -> career pivot -> string of promos. Getting an MBA is almost like that meme where you’re reborn but keep your knowledge. The pivot options are awesome.

Well let’s start with, what do you do at grant Thornton? Have you had your resume reviewed by a hiring professional? What do you want to do (other than make more money)?

I’m in advisory

Hang in there. The first 2-3 years of your professional career are usually the roughest. Job hop when you find the right bump. Make sure to periodically keep applying even if you're satisfied with your job - it gives you a better idea of what else is out there and helps keep your interview skills sharp.

like

It’s been about 5 years now

You're earning a reasonable salary for 27 compared with a lot of people so don't be so hard on yourself. Not sure what level you're at, but what would be the next promotion for you at GT? Normally there is a big jump between manager and senior manager, so work towards that as that increase is normally meaningful. Or as other posters say, job hop between firms - its a hot market at the moment, so you could get a raise there. Polish up your CV and start interviewing. Good luck my friend!

Network on fishbowl! How I got multiple job offers and a higher paying position that I’m happier in

I had replied to a random post on fishbowl that ended up getting me an interview and ultimately an offer! I also made a post asking a question about pros/cons of moving into a certain area of advertising and someone had replied to it that I then began messaging with which also led to an interview and job offer

When I turned 27, I was making ~40k and putting myself through grad school (working full-time and going to school part-time), it was rough. Graduated just before turning 29, fast forward a few years, now ~175k TC (~200k with side hustles). Grad school could be an option if you're stuck, it might open doors.

In terms of titles, the progression was Intern, Analyst, Developer, Engineer, Sr. Engineer, Consultant, Sr. Consultant.

Maybe consider pivoting out of finance. I had a finance degree and did finance work. Then I broke into data & analytics. 10 months later got a 30% raise at another company. Fast fwd 3 more years and basically have double my salary since leaving finance.

like

When I was your age and for most of my career, it meant changing jobs every 2-6 years. I doubled my income in five years by doing that. Companies seem to believe the people they bring in are worth than the ones they have! Not smart of them, but can be a good thing for you. Not fun being new all the time, of course. There's always two sides.

like

What do you do at Grant Thornton and when did you start working? If you’re client facing it’s just putting in the time and getting promotions. If you do some back function for the firm job hop

like

Unfortunately, unless you move to a client facing role (with utilisation and heavy overtime targets), its unlikely you will be able to negotiate higher raises until you get promoted to the next level up.

My fiancé works at Clifton Larsen Allen and they are actively recruiting for finance staff. Staffs start out at about 60k but you have experience and could negotiate up. Make sure you tailor your resume for the job you want, every single time.

You’re in the Midwest 55k is not bad! If you’re feeling down find the most marketable skill in your field and take a class or get a certification on it, reach out on LinkedIn to the people who work where you want to work and start convo with them, and look for remote work where salary can be higher. You’ve got this!

like

Research other companies, maybe midsize to large companies that are well known in your field. Then apply to open positions that correlate to what you want to do, and have high growth potential. Talk to your friends that are in this industry, and start branching your networking more. Ways of networking can include LinkedIn (be proactive; message someone in your industry that you went to school with or have a common connection), career fairs, and if you’re having difficulty finding a higher salary in other companies within your industry apply to small companies.

Nope analyst

Beef up your resume. Be active on linked in. Send requests for people that work at companies you’re interested in. Look at getting an additional certification.

Good morning,

Try job hunting through a recruiter. Robert Half is a great resource when looking for a new position. You can state upfront what salary you are requiring. Most recruiting agencies ask what type of salary you are requesting. They want to get the most for a role because they get a percentage of whatever salary a candidate is offered from the company that hires the person.

I know it can be a wide range, looking for ball park estimates as I start my search since I do not plan on moving within my current firm. Specifically wondering what Big 4, RSM, Grant Thornton, etc. would pay. Thanks!
