It is very difficult to engineer . You might be actually promoted while trying to get fired as you will be acting without fear and stress
this also happened to me at my very first job. I wanted to go back to school and switch careers/industries so figured the severance would be a nice way to afford a new laptop, so I kind of started showing up late and not being as productive... i ended up getting a big raise and promoted because they wanted to "incentivize me" to my previous levels and make me feel valued.
...I've since learned the best way to get fired is to file a sexual harassment claim at a tech bro company. I apparently didn't "fit in" anymore.

It is generally fine to take your foot off the gas pedal while searching for job. Aka dont go the extra mile. I cannot stress this enough- DO THIS!
I think its a very a bad idea to look to actively sabotage your own performance in order to seek severence.
To define the downside of the second scenario.
1. Significant likelihood they will not offer severance- even if its standard - if you are operating in bad faith.
2. You may have to fight for unemployment
3. While companies typically dont speak on performance as a matter of policy, there is no law restricting this in the US and some may.
4. You will need to be explaining a termination to a future employer which is seen as more negative than you resigning
5. Generally its less work to be mediocre at your job than actively bad. The latter will require things like escalation calls, remedial task given to you, and performance improvement plans.

The biggest downside imo is that you lose mental agility and sharpness when it comes time to interview if you do nothing for months
Rising Star
Naaaah. lol
The downside is that in future background checks, you'll have to report that you got terminated from your last role, give an explanation, and they'll contact your previous employer to follow up for more details... What I'd recommend doing instead is getting a second job, sucking at that, getting fired, getting severance, and not including that experience in employment background checks.
If you really wanted to take this to another level, you could literally get like 20 jobs, not tell each job about the other jobs, suck at each of the jobs, get severance for all of the jobs, and cash out to the tune of 20 different jobs.... meanwhile, you hold on to your one real job that you'll report on your resume going forward.
This is not accurate. A background check will not disclose whether your separation was voluntary or involuntary. Your previous employer/HR is not legally allowed to disclose this information if they were asked either.
You can find a new job, but possibly not a particularly good one. Are you willing to take a big pay cut and/or move to another geo?
If you're just burned out, consider taking a sabbatical, LOA or even FMLA. You get time off to recover, think and job hunt, and you still have a job waiting in case you don't find the right exit.
This is the right advice. Use your benefits, get a medical provider to substantiate your mental health break necessity, and regroup.
Having to explain why you got fired to your new employer would probably be a downside
I didn’t say YOU lied. I said lying is never something I would encourage, but you are encouraging it. Your logic is “how would they find out”. The answer to that is, they could very easily. Unless you move to a job with no clearance level or suitability requirement, or no background check, it would be very easy to find out. The risk, it not worth the essentially non existent benefit of collecting unemployment for a couple months. Im not confused at all, every time we were hiring an individual we always asked if they had ever been fired form a position, that’s pretty standard in many professional environments. The risk of lying is something I would never endorse, but you ARE endorsing it. That was my point.
You’ll have to explain why you were ‘fired’ at every interview going forward
Have you heard of background checks? If you lie they could easily find out. Some employers just don’t check/care if you were fired or quit
Rising Star
I get how you’re thinking, but I agree with others that it may not look like what you think it will. Best of luck!
You also need to have the moral depravity to accept you are screwing other people over. Maybe you don’t care about “the company” but your manager is going to look bad when you screw up, somebody else is going to have work long nights and weekends to fix your mess, your leadership will have to explain possibly to client why you are sucking…you will make many other peoples lives worse, so that you can try to scam a system put in place to help those that are legit trying to make ends meet between jobs.
Uh, you don’t get severance if you get fired for cause
What’s wrong with having a frank discussion with your manager to explain your challenges. During that conversation, describe your job search and what you need to move on. Yes, there’s an element of vulnerability in this approach. But think about how clear your conscience will be when you’re upfront about wanting to leave the organization.
How long have you been there? What’s your boss like?
If it’s a truly unbearable situation, one where you’re being bullied or health at risk, don’t bother with this OP and just take a leave of absence or request org transfer/ leave. No job is worth losing your peace of mind/ health.
If you haven’t been there very long, it may seem like you’re alone but you’re not - reach out to managers or peers you trust for support.
You most likely won't get 2 months severance if you are fired. You would maybe be able to get money for the rest of the pay period in which you're fired.
Like someone else mentioned getting “let go” / “rolled off” / “laid off” is very different than getting fired/terminated. If you get let go, you are still eligible for hire and there isn’t anything on your background check that is a red flag. If you get fired, you will have to explain why you got fired to future employers. Also your not getting any severance and maybe not unemployment if you get terminated lol. Idk why you would willingly do that to yourself.. if you hate your job just quit or start interviewing… it doesn’t have to be a complex matter lol
Who says you’d get a severance? Don’t count on that
I signed an exit offer and plan to start in Jan…. Maybe I should try lol
