How do I get into jobs working on data ? I know Java & Python. What would be the best selling factor in these interviews ? Would certification help?

Learn stats, practice making charts in Python, drill SQL with emphasis on self-joins. Then apply for analyst and data scientist positions, or brand yourself as data focused internally. Change resume to emphasize any data work you've already done

like

Just apply. They will ask you to code then you show them that you can do it. That easy cause ton of demand now.

like

Shoot, just say you know python and let the dollars roll in. Seriously.

like

And yet people will still hire you. I know plenty of people hired because they claim python skills but have no clue what they are doing as an analyst. Even know a manager who hired a really smart undergrad engineer and to this day fails to understand why the kid left for Silicon Valley. Direct quote “why is he complaining about not doing advanced data science? he is using Tableau all day. I just think this kid is a problem.” Well that kid is now making more than double what we paid him and doing real data science.

I've been asked to help out interviewing potential software engineers on technical matters. What are some good questions to ask?

I'm already considering asking about their favorite programming language (and why), and whether they like to code in their free time and what they've built.

I don't want to have to ask stereotypical "how do you reverse a linked list" type questions if I can avoid it.

1/2 When a recruiter sends an email (or over the phone) and asks your salary expectations, what do you say?
Do you ask them back the salary range of the position?

How do you effectively
1.Advance/elicit their numbers or range to evaluate your position (at the earliest)
2. and don't/defer disclosing your number (only during end of interview process, or give it out upfront, or just give out your minimum)
What strategies do you employ to get that upper edge during negotiations or in initial phases?

I’m not old BUT when I was younger I thought it was important to have all the alphabets after my name (I.e. Phr, SHRM and all the others). I learning that the younger crowd coming into the market thrives off these identifiers yet they know very little about the real world aspects of the job. I watch leadership roll their eyes at the email footers. I feel like keeping those attached to my name hurts my credibility so I removed them…. I’m I thinking wrong?
