Do you have 1:1 or occasional reviews with your direct report? Share that you are looking for upward mobility. Ask what they need help with in your department and if you can revamp your role and take on new responsibilities with fair compensation. Remind him/her of your strengths and your desire to learn and grow with the company. I would say it’s more of a conversation to discover what areas the company needs personnel and working together on how your skills can be applied and you can take on new responsibilities. Wish you the best of luck!
It sounds like if your direct supervisor is gone and no one has filled their position, then there is room for you to take on more. Kudos to you!! It sounds like you are trucking along and doing really well with very little support. I hope it all works out! Go get ‘em!!
Growth has to come from you. Look around at what you think the company needs that fits your expertise, come up with a basic outline for suggestions/budget/timeline appropriate for solving a problem, call a 1:1 meeting with the appropriate person, and pitch.
Most corporate environments aren't structured to identify and pursue new initiatives that fall evenva little outside a standard role definition, so if you want to grow it's up to you to lead the way. Do the legwork of matching your skills to their needs (i.e. take control of your own career) and show your leadership what you can do in a way they can't ignore. Ans frankly if they ignore you for too long, it's time to go somewhere that will listen!
Thank you for the advice here. My company has an impressive portfolio and managers at each site. It’s more of taking care of the day to day then proving myself because I manage a small staff of 4.
