How do I get out of my own head? My anxiety and anxiousness has ruined client presentations and opportunities to shine many times. I try to be confident in myself but the overthinking always wins

Exercise+meditation+any other activities that help you stay in the present moment. It may not help immediately, but do it for 6 months+ straight and you’ll notice the benefits compound.

OP, Acceptance of the feelings and framing them in a positive manner (i.e. anxiety is helping you prepare for something important and you got this), power poses before presentations (check out Ann Cuddy ted talk), diaphragmatic breathing all help in the moment. All the best.

I’m a massive over thinker, with reoccurring circular thoughts I write them down, and then when the pop up again I focus on the fact that I’ve already thought about them and put the thoughts aside. I find physically writing them down helps me move past the thoughts to focus on other things. Try it, it might help.

I was in a similar position, then I met an SM who I started building trust in. He really accepted me and allowed me to be my authentic self without judgment every day. It helped me accept and embrace who I am (I.e. not living with two diff versions of myself at work vs home which can be tiring) and that confidence and sense of self carried into my client facing work and presentations. I stopped being in my head so much and started focusing on the value I knew I could bring to the table.

likehelpful

I was less guarded / more open about who I was around people and it was real. I think people can sense authenticity and are more likely to connect. I stopped seeing each interaction as a goal / test / burden because it started becoming effortless - having conversations with fellow human beings being myself :) It definitely took me a lot of time and encouragement from my SM to get there. I even completely bombed a presentation but he brushed it off and had my back 100% which really helped me build confidence in the long run. I stopped fearing failure as much after that instance, because the worst had happened (in my mind). And I got through it.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I think as someone above clearly mentioned, I’m not alone in going through this so your posts go a long way to helping the outlying community. Me personally, I’m just afraid of not looking the best in front of people and afraid of failure leading to ridicule. Although I don’t let haters affect me, I still feel the need to fit in.

As an analogy It’s like the waters are calm, and I know there’s no waves, but I’m rocking the boat anyway so I don’t capsize. It doesn’t make sense to me and I’m aware of it happening but feel so powerless to stop it. My heart starts beating fast and all these “what if’s” start popping in my head when they really don’t need to be there :(

I feel this too - thanks for sharing OP. Was feeling alone.

I exercise regularly and focus breath in the morning. But definitely need a “in the moment” coping mechanism.

ask your doc about anti anxiety meds. i take one to help me sleep - not on a consistent basis, but you know those nights where your mind won’t shut up? it shuts your mind up.

something lower dose/more appropriate for performance anxiety might help you.

This is all great advice. One thing that’s helped me is making a mental note when those above me say the wrong thing or have a presenting blooper...for me it reminds me that even the best screw up so that thought lowers my anxiety and allows me to more easily keep the presentation moving when I have a hiccup.

likehelpful

I started taking anti anxiety medication and it has really really helped. It doesn’t mean that you won’t have those panic moments (had one just recently) BUT they happen a lot, LOT less. I can fall asleep on my own, I could meditate / clear my mind, I can more easily recognize that I am over-thinking and know that the world isn’t over just because some things don’t work out when I want them too. The reality is that we all have those moments, it’s just a matter of not having them everyday and addressing them with logic as opposed to more panic.
Next step for me is to incorporate more exercise :)

Remember that everyone else has their own anxieties/insecurities too. People are thinking more so about themselves and their own problems rather than yours. I have struggled with anxiety a lot but this realization has help me incredibly over the past few months. Nobody cares THAT much about what you’re doing or if you mess up. Be confident in your own ability.

I know this sounds like a crazy thing, but taking improv classes actually helped me. You’ll get a lot of the same things (wanting to look good/be funny, not taking things too seriously, not overthinking). It helped me be an active listener and to get out of my head (most of the time). If you direct your attention to someone else (rather than inward) you’ll realize a lot of that anxiety will disappear. You’ll be concentrating on what it is you’re trying to actually accomplish vs whether it’s app coming out in the right way.

I feel really wholesome that so many people have come out and lent their ears while also giving back on what they do to deal with these issues. I’m happy this bowl can act as a medium on where we can all come together! Thank you everyone who has posted, and the many of you who are reading this thread going through the same mental disparity, you’re not alone and we’re all here for each other I promise :)
